I've owned 4 or 5 different generations of the MULE since the first generation in the mid-1990s, and I think the evolving designs are always well-thought-out. That said, at this point the improvements are in small increments, so it's not likely the next gen is going to make this one obsolete with some must-have new features.
A 2 liter would probably be plenty for 4 miles. This is a 3 liter. That said, you don't have to fill it up all the way. This one also has a pocket to put some snacks in. Some of the smaller, more sleek ones don't have extra space for something like that. I always use a 3 liter when I go on hikes and that way I can pack a few snacks and an emergency blanket in case I break my leg or something and have to spend the night outside.

I find the way it fits to your body just to be way more ergonomic for running/jogging where there's a lot of up/down motion. The small pockets on the front are great for storing a granola bar or whatever so you can eat w/o having to stop and take the pack off.
