Gigabyte has improved greatly over some of their past failings, the reviews and quality on their new boards are something I'd be comfortable running again (which wasn't the case all that long ago).

That said, this board is overkill for 99% of the people out there, and the price is on the higher end even on a deal. For general gaming or productivity there are X670e or even B650e boards for $100-150 less that most people could run and never know a difference.

and have less PCI lanes for m,2 drives, slower memory support. plus this the cheapest X870e mobo on the market...at this price anyway lol

Most X870E motherboards will gimp your GPU to x8 lanes from x16 if you slot any M.2 in 2 specific slots so effectively, you can only have 2 M.2s in an AM5 board and still have x16 on your GPU. The safe slots are usually the primary Gen5 slot to the CPU and the 1 that's linked to the chipset. For this particular board M2A_CPU and M2D_SB. Slotting anything in M2B_CPU or M2C_CPU reduces your GPU bandwidth to x8.

MSI X870E Godlike has up to 7 with an expansion card, but that board looks like a paper launch? (Z890 Godlike too)

and in x8 its only 1-2% performance difference with a 4090 on a x8 vs x16. is more storage worth a few frames.....for me it would be.

It depends on the application but it can go as far as 10-15% performance deficit according to Techpowerup's review of the 4090 when they switched to PCI-e 3.0 x16 (which is equivalent to 4.0 x8). When the 5090 rolls around I wouldn't dream of dropping that much money only to leave some performance on the table.

The average user still isn't going to notice the difference. A large percentage of "normal" builds out there still only have 1 m.2 drive and then a 2.5 ssd, or even a platter drive. And decently priced memory isn't going to be going over the 6400mhz most b650e boards support, with the return on speeds faster than that being small, especially for the price increase.
Regardless, X870E boards, X670E, and B650E boards have the same usable CPU PCIe lanes, while the X670e and x870e have 20x4.0 chipset PCIe lanes to the B650e's 12X4.0. Again, 90% of users could save the $100-150 and never know the difference. Literally the only major difference in the chipset from X670e to X870e is the x870e is guaranteed to have 4.0 USB support, while that is optional on the x670e.

I mean if we want to talk average user... They would be fine with a Ryzen 3800x and a x470 mobo.

have you looked at the Asrock X870e Nova, has pretty much all the stuff on the Taichi but costs less. probably the best value of the Asrock boards this gen.

I do actually really like that board, and it would probably be my pick as a recommendation for anyone wanting an X870e board. That being said, after my arguments for value in motherboards, I'm planning on buying the Gigabyte X870E AORUS PRO ICE because I'm going to be "that guy" and build an all-white system, and it's the best looking white board out there (IMO) currently. Form over function/value in that choice for sure. haha
