Wish it was free for commercial use as well, like they do with the community edition of intellij.

May as well set yourself up with vscode, which is just as good and arguably better, but more importantly can be used for commercial projects.

Yep, cool but nothing to see here. VS Code and the VS IDE offer the Community edition which you can use for comercial use.

Not sure why you're dismissing my point, and you can code on notepad too. Doesn't mean we cannot express our desire.

Huh? I didn't dismiss anything but actually agreed with you.

My "nothing to see here" referred to their announcement not being a big deal given that you can't use it for comercial purposes.

My apologies. I saw a down vote and a comment that could be interpreted either way and indication to go use VS. Misinterpretation. My bad.

The days of the IDE are sort of over in the sense that the real selling point of any coding tool (text editors, command line tools, etc.) will be AI integration. If you haven't already looked at Cursor (editor) or Aider (cmdline) then do so just to get experience with how AI can help you with development. VS Code with Copilot is good too.

I agree to some point but not for AI features. VS Code's introduction of the LSP changed everything for simple text editors and sort of killed IDEs. Nowadays anything that can run an LSP language server and treesitter (e.g. vim, or better neovim, emacs, sublime, etc) all caught up overnight in fancy language features traditionally only found in IDEs. As for AI features you'll find Copilot has plugins for these simple editors too. So for slightly more advanced users who want to skip bloated IDEs I'd just recommend a simple editor + LSP + treesitter for whatever language you're programming in.

Wow, that's quite amazing! As someone dabbling in UnrealEngine, I repeatedly see Rider as being much better than VS. I've never bothered to try it because I'm learning this just for fun, and didn't want to spend money on Rider. Now I can see what the fuss is about!

I am a professional developer and couldn't give a rat's ass about AI assistants.
