I just looked into WIFI extenders last week, and every option from Linksys that I looked at required an you to create an account with them to work.

Sorry, Linksys, I'm not making an account with you just to use this device.
It only replaces the "wifi part" of the router. AP mode means it only forwards the packets between ethernet and wifi radio, but not processing it as a gateway. Your router does more than forwarding the packet from ISP to other devices. It also act as a firewall, converts private IP to public IP (NAT), and allocating private IP addresses (DHCP).
An AP or a switch does nothing of those.

^ That's the simple explain. Technical definition is that router acts on layer 3, while switch and AP acts on layer 2 without looking into layer 3. In enterprise setup, there are also routers that doesn't act as gateway, but only forwards packet based in IP. And there are also L3 switch which can look into some of the layer 3 information, which blurs the line between router and switch. If this paragraph gives you a headache, you shouldn't be reading it in the first place.
I see they decided to go with a more conventional functional design and not make it look like a spider or the B2 bomber.

How does the WiFi 6 upgrade thingy work? This plugs into the router and essentially "replaces" the router?

Linksys and the other consumer brands are basically manufactured e-waste. They essentially have an expiration date. Order something from Ubiquiti, they have gear for all knowledge levels and it won't die a year from now like the others. It costs more upfront, but it's worth every penny.

What do you mean it dies in a year? I never had a router die on me, any brand.

Just an elitists', trying to justify why he over spent on a product that is just as cheaply made as any other, most Ubi fan boys are. But but but it comes with dashboards, and only the occasional firmware update will fry my gateway controller, lol.

Can I use this to set up a new, separate network, just for my IoT devices? The thought process is that I'll easily be able to control them with one router, and all other stuff can remain on the original ISP router.
I can't tell if this will just copy the network name and not let me setup a custom name for a separate wifi connection?

Same here. Ubiquiti is high quality equipment, but I had a Netgear Nighthawk that worked great for me for 5+ years before I upgraded it (it still worked fine), and I have a TP-Link router going strong for a couple of years now. Come to think of it, I've never had a router fail before.

The deal is dead right now, but the MX1300 for $20 is working pretty fast as my access point. I would recommend waiting for that if you can.

This is literally a rebrand of last year's version of this thing - the Belkin RX7500 (Linkys and Belkin are now one company)
You'll notice it looks identical - It was on sale new from Amazon for $15, though that was obviously clearance as Amazon no longer lists it. But I see the RX7500 on eBay for like $20

I used it for a while at WiFi6/AX1800 it was great.

I'm looking for TP-Link AX3000 WiFi 6 Range Extender (RE715X) that's on sale at $100 now but found this Linksys. With $30 difference, which one should I get for a reliable WiFi 6 AP at home?
Thanks.

I have literally the same exact dilemma. Wondering if the OneMesh compatibility with my TP-Link router is worth the extra bit of money or if it's better to run it as a separate SSID anyway.

Will these range extenders work with different brand routers or it all has to be made by same company?
