Have been thinking of building a new tower PC since mine is older than dirt. Anyone have personal experience / knowledge of this vs the ryzen 7 5800x3d?

The 5800x3d is out of production so grab that if you can find it for a good price. If you're not a gamer, grab this

horrible pricenewegg had a flash sale for a 7900x3d for less than this...
Majority of people looking at this deal are looking to upgrade their build using the motherboard they have already possibly with a 3000 series chip. 7900x3d requires a whole new build.

Depends on your use case but if you are going to keep the computer for a long time I would get an AM5 board for DDR5, PCIE 5, and a cpu upgrade path.
If you already have an AM4 motherboard then that is a different scenario.
I had to look up the "XT" chip version, which is real. I was only familiar with the 5900X and assumed the "XT" was a typo from AMD's GPU branding.
Edit: Removed "...and designates the 'highest bin' version of the chip. It should have a small performance advantage compared to the X version" due to inaccuracy. AMD's naming conventions are moronic.

I wouldn't build on AM4 unless you've already got parts you need to use
Most of the people buying 5800x3d and 5900's are people who already have a running AM4 system

even with that, 5900xt is a bad deal for a drop in upgrade
this will not hold its value whatsoever, which is my point
unless you just need a "new" cpu with 16 cores
other am4 cpus have way better pricing
and in case someone wants a gaming cpu, just drop in a 5700x3d, price is insanely good for those right now

amd's horrible naming sense is back at it again
this "XT" is actually a "low binned" 5950x
5900x has 12 cores and 24 threads, this "XT" has 16 cores, 32 threads
5950x has 16 cores, 32 threads
just a 100mhz difference between between both the base and max boost clock between the 5900XT and 5950X

Sorry for offering helpful advice. Tons of ignorant people here.

As others have pointed out, this confusingly named CPU is a lower-clocked variant of the 16-core 5950X, as opposed to a higher-clocked variant of the 12-core 5900X. It performs a few percentage points lower than the 5950X due to its slower clock speeds.
This is a good CPU for productivity in terms of price to performance, but it really only makes sense to purchase if you are already on the AM4 platform and don't want the hassle and added expense of buying an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 RAM.
There was a deal last month that included an AM4 motherboard for $320. I would wait for a better deal on this.

Unless you're on an extreme budget, do not build a new system on am4. No upgrade path

I think there's still room for the price on this to go down come the holidays
