I'm just beginning my switch over to a UniFI cloud gateway and have been eyeballing the switches.....could I use this as just a switch connected to a cloud gateway ultra? It seems this price is cheaper than most of their 8 port switches. if I dont need POE could this just act as a managed switch? Thanks for your input.

This is overkill for a home network. Uisp devices are for major runs and ptp installations. You can even host your isp through their system along with including billing. Great for farms that need to beam across land (you can go miles) and cheaper than running any cable. As long as you have power, you can blanket that area with a beamed solutions.

just FYI in case this isnt obvious, this is the UISP line and not part of Unifi. You wouldn't manage or control this within the Unifi Network app
to clarify a bit more, ignore the pricing. if you want a high-end home network, you should be looking at the Unifi line. if you're looking to become a local or regional ISP like a mini Verizon, look at UISP.

As others are mentioning, if you don't know what this is: you probably don't need or want it. Ubiquiti has two lines of products. One (Unifi) is essentially for normal networking--connecting clients to the network. The other is for connecting networking infrastructure--linking networking equipment to each other and not really the final end users or computers. There's overlap between the two, but that's a rough generalization. Mostly the UISP devices are for making wireless point to point links that connect buildings together. In a large campus, you may be connecting many buildings together and have many devices. Or if you're a wireless ISP, you would connect remote houses to your main high-speed link to the Internet. If you want to manage all these devices centrally but locally, you would get this console. Ubiquiti previously offered free cloud hosting that would accomplish this, but recently announced that they will start charging. So, if you want to migrate the management of radios locally, this would be great for that. I believe you can also setup your own cloud and run their controller software UISP (not Unifi).

Given this is more of a professional bit of equipment, I am a little curious why it was on this site. Not a problem, just has me curious. Usually professional equipment like this is purchased via official means by the company, and in my experience at least, there's little to no consideration ever given to price. Even when I worked at a startup, they insisted on having some like $5K Cisco managed switch (without any kind of UPS or power conditioning) when honestly they could have been served just as well with an unmanaged switch at like a 90% discount. Maybe if they ever grew past a couple dozen employees and had their own building, or at least a couple of floors in a building, but when they were all crammed into just one suite on a single floor of a single building?

Pros:
Self locally managed Router/Controller which gives you management access to the UISP, Edge, & Air Ubiquiti lines.
Good cost to performance ratios ($99 bucks for a managed router/switch)

Cons:
UISP isn't as intuitive of a management system as Unifi unless you are an integrator comfortable w/ console/command prompts.
The Non-Unifi roadmap is not well marketed & has niche use in a home or homelab.

For regular users and even prosumers, this is not the switch you're looking for. Move along.
Can this be turned into a switch, sure, it has ports and you can configure the ports to be a virtual switch. But it is not what it was designed for. While all ports are layer 3, it is meant to be managing the gateways downlink of each port and have visibility into the downlink gateways so you can assign proper bandwidth and be able to bill appropriate SLAs.
It's like grandma needs a car for grocery shopping, and you get her a F1 racer. Outside of the hilarity ensued and F1 go brrr, the main thing would be a F1 car is not easy to even start, twitchy control, single occupant only, horrible mpg, needs an engine rebuilt every 10 times grandma goes to Walmart, and no trunk space.

Ubiquiti sent out an email to the current UISP users notifying them that they are ending free cloud hosting. So you have to either get this get this or a gateway if you don't want a subscription cost.

I assume the discount is just to appease the current users
