I did, in 2018 when I bought my 2TB Samsung 970 Pro. That SSD started to give me problems in December 2022, literally weeks before SSD prices started to collapse. First, Samsung promised to reimburse me in full because UPS had problems delivering the replacement. Then they tried to go low, offering around $250 instead. I fought them for six months. They only changed their tune after I got the New York State Consumer Protection Agency involved. It was a lightning fast turn-around, to be honest. I pocketed the $691 they sent me since I'd already purchased a 2TB WD SN850X for $80 on Amazon six months earlier.

Had this deal come out 3 months ago, I probably would of picked it over the 300$ 4TB drive I have now.

I feel you - waiting for the 4TB Samsung NVMEs to hit 200 on sale, but would probably compromise on an 8TB if they hit the 500 point - although we're far away from that right now.

Absolutely overkill for any gaming/consumer scenario, but I am a data hoarder (have 2 16 TB drives at around 90% and my PC drives 2x4TB (SATA), 1x2TB and 1x1TB (NVME) around 60%)

Yeah I use a 4TB right now for my unraid cache drive but an 8TB might be worth it to keep stuff on the cache for longer.

For data hording wouldn't a traditional HDD be better?

Not sure the 4TB 990 Pro will ever hit $200 (I bought mine for $250 this time last year) and the "Gen 5 lite" categorization of the Evo Plus will probably keep it from dropping that low, too. But we can hope and I'll pick up another 990 Pro if it gets down to $250 again later this month. I'm sure in a few more years whatever the successor to the 990 series will have a cheaper 4TB drive and we'll be debating $300 8TB drive prices, but IMO we're a ways off that

Yes, most SSD's need power every six months to a year or else they start losing data.

There's people who've hooked up unused 30 year old 40MB IDE hard drives and they fired right up.
