The historic low for this refurbished drive has been $156. It went FP at that price and was a very popular deal. And so, it's $9 higher this time, which I personally think is not much of a difference that should impact your buying decision.

Deals on high capacity hard drives have been fewer off late. The last good deal was for 12TB drives and that was a month ago. Prices for all the 16TB to 20TB capacity drives have somehow crept up.

Of course, thanksgiving is around the corner so people might be waiting for that. If the recent Amazon day prices are any indication you should be able to get a new 16TB NAS drive for $250. The hope is for a $200 price but who is to say that will happen. Like I said, hard drive prices have been high.

If you need NAS drives, and have already done research on the refurbished route, this is a good price. It's close enough to the historic low, and you might be waiting for a month or more for the next deal to come around.

That's what I did, and bought 5 of these. I got the Synology DS1522+ on last month's prime sale. There were no good high capacity drive sales at the time, so I was waiting for a deal to pop-up.

No one has a crystal ball, but if I had to predict based on recent HD prices and sales, I don't expect anything spectacular on Black Friday. If something great pops up, I'll think about returning these. But if the best BF deal is going to be a 16TB new for $250, I'll just keep these. Granted that's new vs refurbished; but savings across 5 drives add up.

Ordered one. I've never bought a refurbished drive before but since I paid $199 last year for the 16TB version of this new from BH, I figured it's a good deal that's worth a shot. Seller seems reputable and it comes with a 5 year warranty. Anyone seeing this post in the future, feel free to ask me how the drive is since I'll probably forget to post an update.

5 drive limit is a dealbreaker. I need 16 plus 2 spares (at a minimum)

Can Seagate be trusted? I'd really like some WD 20TB's for $200...

I wonder how many hours it worked. Do they clear the smart data?

These drives were launched in 2020. I would assume they are that old. They are generally pulled from enterprise servers, so one would assume they were in use all this while.

Are these as reliable as the WD or Toshiba?

I might have just been unlucky, I see other people have good success with these drives, but I bought 8 of these recently, 2 didn't work and 2 clicked and failed a short SMART test. I sent them all back.

Did they ship them well? I would say they definitely should work. Refurbs are tested. It's a matter of if they take care of them well enough in getting them to you. Quality packing and shipping makes all the difference

Maybe 10 years ago your question may be valid.
These drives are reliable.

This is not actually an enterprise drive. This is for a consumer market, but helium filled, long life enterprise quality. I think this is a good deal, not a slick deal, though.

That's correct. These are not enterprise drives. I didn't say they were Smilie. Just that they are likely pulled from enterprise servers. The quantity that these refurb sellers sell make it highly unlikely they've been sourced from anywhere else.
And regarding these not being enterprise drives, they are supposedly much closer to enterprise drives than the regular ones. Within the Ironwolf Pro label, Seagate has two types of drives - those with 1.2 million hours MTBF, and those with 2.5 million hours MTBF. These drives match their Exos enterprise line in 2.5 million hour MTBF. Of course, MTBF values should be taken with a grain of salt, but they do provide some sort of comparative statistic to gauge reliability.

The other point worth considering is that the Seagate Exos enterprise line are known to be extremely loud. For home NAS use, these Ironwolf Pro's are often suggested to be the better buy due to lower noise (i.e. as long as you get the 2.5 million hour MTBF ones, which these are). Now if there were good deals on Exo's I might have bought them just the same (or any other brand for that matter 😀). It just so happens that deals on high capacity hard drives have been few of late!
