Every time I've traded in my Pixel for a newer one I've gotten a great deal. Went from 1 to 3 to 6 and about to get 9. Maybe it just sucks if you're trying to switch out from a Pixel to something else.

Popularity contest. Most consumers are not that smart and only believe two brands exist: Samsung and Apple. And most people are followers, so if a friend or family member has a Samsung, they will buy one too. And teenagers will follow their peers and get iPhones. I would never buy either of those brands and prefer Pixels more true Android OS. So even though there are better brands, Samsung & Apple are the most popular and most demand for, so trade if value is higher. But remember, popular does not mean better..

THIS. If you know you're going to switch between brands then Pixel isn't for you. However, if you stay with Pixel, you get very good trade-in values. Also, if you have Google One Drive, you get between 3% & 10% (depending on cloud amount) back in Google Store credit. Finally, you will get extra incentives like the aforementioned 10% off or dollars (I got a $150 off offer yesterday which I used in conjunction with the trade-in on my daughter's phone).
