ie. It uses your Windows DDR RAM to work better when transferring (Writing) a lot of large files in a short amount of time and not slow down in speed. It requires the drive to be installed internally in a M.2 slot. If you use an external drive adapter HBM is not enabled.

seems like they are cutting corners to make it cheaper, then market it as the new technology to make SSD's faster.

I'm not sure I'd say that. HMB is a technology that provides considerable benefits to DRAM-less SSDs. Though, one could argue that this makes manufacturers less motivated to make drives with DRAM.
