  • Here is the first book in the landmark series that has redefined imaginative fiction and become a modern masterpiece.
  • In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the North of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

By way of comparison, since his last book the entire Expanse series of 9 books was completed and the authors started a new series.

Honestly probably better unfinished. Book 4 & 5 blow. So much boring filler, it basically died at Book 3.

I'd say "I wonder if we can get Brandon Sanderson to finish it when GRRM dies?" but knowing Sanderson, he's probably already written the last GoT's book just cause he got board and wanted to know how it ends.

Sanderson I really enjoy, but he's not not GRRM in terms of creating absolutely beautiful prose.

I'll buy the whole series when book six comes out.
So that's $30 I'll never spend.

The Dunk & Egg books are VERY good, even though they are short stories the flow is better than the Game of Thrones books and I highly recommend them

Yep, some people have compared GMMR to Tolkien but one thing that Tolkien never did was excrete a bunch of filler just to fulfill commercial publishing contracts and extract maximum revenue from it. While I love the more adult, reality-based Machiavellian world view that GRMM's books are based on rather than Tolkien's simplistic good-vs-evil traditional narrative, LOTR (the book not the crappy Peter Jackson movies made from it, and esp. not the craptastically unwatchable "The Hobbit" prequel he made of it) was beautifully economical, not a superfluous sentence in the entire thing.
