Not sure about this item but haven't been thrilled with the Cotopaxi quality. My jacket hasn't held up like my Patagonia, North Face, etc.

I would say it's the design not the brand that matters. For me, a one-bag travel backpack should meet airline carry-on limit in size, lightweight yet durable, have clamshell opening or side zippers (easy to pack and reach items), okay weight distribution, expandable (so you get to carry more when not on the plane), easy-to-reach external pockets, good warranty. Organization system and waterproofness aren't important to me. I use my own organizers for easier packing and better organization (hence better weight distribution). When there's heavy rain, I stay indoors.

I have the 35L and you can sneak it on as a personal item as long as you don't overstuff it. I doubt you would be as lucky with this one. The compartments are a great size, tons of zippered storage that seems like they are all large enough to fit sneakers and all your toiletries. The lack of a water bottle holder is the only negative as well as the laptop sleeve not being able to fit in a 13" Dell XPS, one of the smallest, thinnest lightest laptops available.

42L is a lot to carry without a decent frame. Also note that the colors are not guaranteed.

I have the 42L It is 3 years old and I use it for all traveling which includes camping. Very comfortable to use as a backpack. Got one for a DIL and my husband the following year. Picked one up from Sierra yesterday for our other DIL as a Christmas present. On a side note it went to London in the baggage hold and not a bit of damage.

The personal size is also on sale for $99. I just ordered one for my wife. She liked the rectangular design of the cotopaxi better than the regular teardrop shape of the backpack she presently uses as a personal item. Once stuffed, it's a tight squeeze getting the fatter part of the backpack in and out from under the seat in front of her. We haven't received it yet but the shoebox type design of the Cotopaxi should fit a bit better. At least, that's the plan !
