So I'm on a 3 month $4.99 a month promo. It's set to expire on 1/5. I take it that if I cancel, neither of the codes will work correct? Cause right now it's telling me not valid when I try(haven't cancelled yet).

You said monthly, and 5th date. You should absolutely be able to cancel immediately (it's not the 5th yet) and thus when the 5th hits your current monthly subscription will be cancelled and you can resubscribe as annual member with this code on the 6th?
Now if it was past the 5th, you'd have already paid for this month and the promo code is going to expire before 12-5 so... the only choice you'd have would be create new account before promo expires 11-24
