looking at the selections, even at 40% off, these are terrible deals, you can get better deals off ebay...

The Precision T3630 I got via a similar sale for $300 was a great buy - it came with a Quadro P2000 I was able to flip for $130, and the power supply was a 460w gold rated power supply with a 8-pin PCI-e connector (D460EGM-00) - enough to power a GTX 1660 Ti easily - and with the flip of the P2000 the 1660Ti was effectively cash neutral. If you want to spend more this can power effectively any GPU that only uses a single 8-pin connector.

Main issue I had was that the non k chip variants get a cooler which isn't adequate and the CPU will thermal throttle under load. You can pretty readily find the awkwardly named 0T57JF 0KTDJC cooler and fan combo on eBay which slots perfectly into the Precision T3630 and fixes the problem.

Edit to add - this is pretty much exactly what I got - I think it was a few dollars cheaper: https://www.dellrefurbished.com/i...000253&p=1

Will the price of Precision 3431 SFF $209 get better?
Several yrs ago bought on NewEgg for about $100 - looking for an upgrade!

Any other deals to sweeten this?

Earlier in the year, they were offering 50% discounts, but I don't know if that will be repeated. 40% seems more common lately. Supply and demand. With that said, I've been very happy with the desktop I got back in January. Wife uses it almost daily with no complaints, so can't beat that.

I think it depends on their supply/demand but also specs. Sometimes higher end specs maybe priced much nicer, like 16 --> 32gh upgrade for $20 more for example...

Have room and power for more serious gaming and workstation uses.

can i upgrade to windows 11 for free?
Yes, any computer with an Intel 8th gen or newer CPU can be upgraded for free to Windows 11 out of the box. Even the ones that say no OS, you can just do a clean install of Windows 11 for free because the Windows Pro licenses is baked into the motherboard.

You can technically get Windows 11 on old Intel (and AMD) CPUs as well, but it requires a little bit more work.

Edit: as others have corrected me, if Dell says "No OS", that means that it didn't come with Windows when it was first sold/leased. Therefore, you won't be able to activate Windows for free on these machines. I recently picked up an old Optiplex off of Craigslist that didn't have an OS on the drive, but I was able to activate Windows on it. I thought this would be the same. Sorry for the confusion. 🥴

FYI: Recently bought a Dell refurbished OptiPlex. Found out the unit was actually refurbished by FedEx (label indicated so). The keyboard and mouse are non-Dell cheaply made ones (Limeide, with a key fell out probably during shipment). The unit I ordered supposed to include a Nvidia card, but it wasn't (eventually got a nominal partial refund). The condition of the PC itself was ok (internal was quite clean without noticeable dust), and Windows 10 was setup without issue. The onboard coin battery was dead (found out due to BIOS not keeping date/time/config after un-plug). Overall, did not regret with the purchase, but do feel the refurbishing process by FedEx was rough and rushed. All 8th gen Intel CPU and above are qualified for Windows 11 upgrade.

why doesn't it have an OS if it is baked in?

thanks

Microsoft does hardware fingerprinting of computers. They can detect if they is a Windows license associated with the computer based on the hardware fingerprint. Thus, if the machine shipped with Windows, it will have a fingerprint associated with a license, and you can just install and it'll pick up the license.

This wouldn't work on just any machine AFAIK. It has to be a machine that ships with Windows. (And not all Dell machines do.)

That's what I have been doing over the years. Only purchase business models off eBay. HP EliteDesk G5 with i5 9500T no drive for less than $100.

I have a slightly earlier Optiplex SFF with the i5-9500, and it idles at 9W. That makes these great for homelab/server type setups that are gonna run 24/7. They typically have PCIe x16 and x4 slots, which is also quite expansion friendly. I turned mine into an OPNSense router.
