I shoot 75% with the backscreen, but when its sunny I have to switch to the viewfinder just to verify things are in focus. Even when I just need to view the photos I've just taken, I will often use the viewfinder.
The other issue I have is its cold shoe. I know most people won't use an external flash, especially for travel. But if you only have one camera that you're taking for travel, its nice to have a hot shoe to allow you to get a shot that may be severely backlit.
This is all to say, I would get the S5II for 300 more for the weather sealing, hot shoe, viewfinder, and the dual card slots.
Or even better, look for one a used Sony A6XX crop sensors. It'll probably be smaller than the S9. Unless you really need the full frame sensor.

I am still leaning towards keeping this one as backpacking/skiing the weight is a factor for me

Someone said "a smaller camera is still a smaller camera", while that's true, a usable lens will make it much deeper. So if you have an expectation of just shoving it into your jacket pocket with a lens, you have to research what lens will actually fit.
Also you mention skiing and backpacking. are you planning on one-hand shooting? Depending on the lens, the lack of grip on that body may make that difficult.
S9 is also not weather sealed. So that may be an important factor if you're taking this skiing.
For a newbie/travel, I'd still go with a Sony or Fuji APSC camera. I think they have the right balance of features and portability. I don't think any of them are pocketable though. APSC in general will have more compact lenses compared to Full frame.
Other cameras that are great for portable travel are the fixed lens cameras:
Pansonic LX100ii
Ricoh GRiii
Fuji X100F/V/VI
Sony RX100
So I went through a similar search. I first tried the Nikon Z30, thinking I use my phone to take pictures so maybe I don't need a viewfinder. The screen isn't as nice as a phone and it does make it difficult to verify focus.
I got an opportunity to buy an X100VI and have been using that for the past 2 months. I think its a much more versatile travel camera, IF you don't need to switch lenses(its fixed). I also like the jpegs out of it more than my Nikon. Which is important to newbies that don't want to edit raw.
The S9 is a good looking smaller Full frame camera for the price, but it does lack a lot of things you expect for a camera. The full frame also shines in low light situations and if you're mostly going to use it outside with plenty of light, then a crop sensor will work just as well. If you're doing lots of indoor photography or night photography, then I'd prob go with the full frame. But you also lack the hot shoe in the S9 if you want to do flash photography in the future.
