Tried it in best buy . It is very hard to grip. A side handle grip is a must.

The lenses it comes with is the problem. It is 20-60, 3.5-5.6 and made for S5. This lenses pretty much defeats the purpose of buying a compact camera like this S9. Panasonic doesn't really have compact lenses for this L mount. there is one 18-40, 4.5-6.3 that's all.

Thanks looks like this is the better buy for my uses then of hiking & travel
Don't underestimate having a viewfinder. If this is a photo focused camera and you'll be shooting in the sun, the backscreens get hard to view.

I shoot 75% with the backscreen, but when its sunny I have to switch to the viewfinder just to verify things are in focus. Even when I just need to view the photos I've just taken, I will often use the viewfinder.

The other issue I have is its cold shoe. I know most people won't use an external flash, especially for travel. But if you only have one camera that you're taking for travel, its nice to have a hot shoe to allow you to get a shot that may be severely backlit.

This is all to say, I would get the S5II for 300 more for the weather sealing, hot shoe, viewfinder, and the dual card slots.
Or even better, look for one a used Sony A6XX crop sensors. It'll probably be smaller than the S9. Unless you really need the full frame sensor.

I love that the S9 feels like a super size version of my GM1. Unfortunately it has a lot of the same short comings too: poor grip and no view finder.

Other colors are priced the same. I've heard that they are hard to grip, though.
I'm certain Panasonic will be more than glad to sell you exclusive Panasonic stick on grips for $75 !

Thank you for the feedback as this will my first camera. Do you recommend for a newbie still?

I am still leaning towards keeping this one as backpacking/skiing the weight is a factor for me

I really wish Panasonic made the S9 a point and shoot tbh
Me too. I'm wanting to replace my LX-7 for awhile now. I can't find anything comparable.

For a newbie that just wants a point and shoot style camera...I think this is fine, but as a newbie, there are other cameras in this price range and less that can give you more features and still be the same size.

Someone said "a smaller camera is still a smaller camera", while that's true, a usable lens will make it much deeper. So if you have an expectation of just shoving it into your jacket pocket with a lens, you have to research what lens will actually fit.

Also you mention skiing and backpacking. are you planning on one-hand shooting? Depending on the lens, the lack of grip on that body may make that difficult.
S9 is also not weather sealed. So that may be an important factor if you're taking this skiing.

For a newbie/travel, I'd still go with a Sony or Fuji APSC camera. I think they have the right balance of features and portability. I don't think any of them are pocketable though. APSC in general will have more compact lenses compared to Full frame.
Other cameras that are great for portable travel are the fixed lens cameras:
Pansonic LX100ii
Ricoh GRiii
Fuji X100F/V/VI
Sony RX100

So I went through a similar search. I first tried the Nikon Z30, thinking I use my phone to take pictures so maybe I don't need a viewfinder. The screen isn't as nice as a phone and it does make it difficult to verify focus.
I got an opportunity to buy an X100VI and have been using that for the past 2 months. I think its a much more versatile travel camera, IF you don't need to switch lenses(its fixed). I also like the jpegs out of it more than my Nikon. Which is important to newbies that don't want to edit raw.

The S9 is a good looking smaller Full frame camera for the price, but it does lack a lot of things you expect for a camera. The full frame also shines in low light situations and if you're mostly going to use it outside with plenty of light, then a crop sensor will work just as well. If you're doing lots of indoor photography or night photography, then I'd prob go with the full frame. But you also lack the hot shoe in the S9 if you want to do flash photography in the future.

Open box, excellent for $1305, add in 5% cashback = $1240.Plan to use this traveling and hiking. Thoughts? Guides? Tricks? carrying case recommendations?
Get a cage it will be helpful for hiking as it will make it more rugged and add grip; I bought one from Amazon. In terms guide checkout youtube for S9 - this one is perfect for anyone new to S9 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J...7E&t=2378s

While this lens and the S9 are both very respectable (especially after the recent S9 firmware update), this combination doesn't really make much sense. The lens makes the camera too bulky to be a pocketable point and shoot and the camera body is too small to offer a good grip and more professional features. I would recommend looking at the current s5ii deal if you want a slightly larger, more full-featured setup, or the S9 + the 18-40mm if you want a compact FF setup.

Is there a point of having both lenses?

One could sell/trade in the lens on MBP or KEH for a more compact lens

Is full frame really worth it for a travel camera? I'm still rocking m43 like a weirdo creeper. G9 with a 12-60 Pana Leica for one lens one camera travel. For more discreet camera situations, got an Olympus E-PL10 with a Lumix 20mm.

depends on what you value - I've 1" sensor, m43, APS-C & Full frame. Last trip to Italy all I took was X100 VI + Sony RX100 VI. My back said thankyou but there are times when you feel like full frame could have done better justice to the frame.

I guess it's the same thing as do you really need a m43 if a iPhone camera does everything as well.
