Great deal! This set has a lot of large bricks in it, not a ton of tiny pieces like most of the creative boxes.

Seems like that but not much variety which some have. 10 color with all the same blocks.

1x2: 20
1x4: 8
2x2: 20

Wow, more than a third of the pieces in this set are 1x1 or 1x2? Over half the pieces are 2x2 or smaller. And we think this is a good mix of decently sized pieces? Talk about shinkflation

Those are the pieces you need to build something with structural integrity. I started my kids off with a different creative box that came with a plastic bin. The pieces in there had a lot of variety, but almost all small. They were trying to stick together a bunch of little 1x1 and 1x2 size pieces that would just crumble if you nudge it. I got them the set here that's on sale and they were MUCH happier with it. Kids age 13,7, and 4. I ended up getting them a second box of this set and just ordered them a third.

it's tough when they're kind of in between duplo and regular legos; my 3 year old enjoys playing with this older brothers Legos (driving the cars, opening and closing doors, moving the minifigs) but he wouldn't have the patience or wherewithal to build the sets himself (Yet)

From my experience I would highly recommend LEGO Duplo series instead.
