For these free delivery orders over $30, do you still have to tip the driver?

No tipping in my area as Safeway does the delivery and they are not allowed to accept tips. Had so many issues stopped using when I had a free year

Safeway/Albertsons (Jewel-Osco) stores are the worst stores in my area. Produce is low quality, anything remotely decent is ridiculously overpriced, and generic brands are lower tier. They digital couponing everything, trying to make you jump over hoops just to make a basic grocery purchase. I stopped using them entirely, there are much better options available everywhere.
And these guys now trying to merge with Kroger to monopolize the market.

I live in an Albertson's area and tips are requested. It is not an Alberston's employee, it is a gig worker delivering. I tried the delivery service twice for my mom who cant drive anymore and I used the Albertsons website to order to make sure my mom got her coupons deals. If it were an Albertson's employee delivering I would have her sign up for this service (her albertsons is newer, with a great bakery and produce and the lowest cost meats and dairy in her area, whoelse has 43 varties of shreeded cheese and it is frequently on sale for .97 or 1.27). The person who delivered both times did not get some of the right items and the communication barrier was difficult. I even gave a rather large tip, much more then the minimum hoping my mom would get good service (we were trying help her with accepting not driving anymore and all the services she could use).
The Albertsons was very nice about the item mistakes and our service issues, and admitted it is not their employees and they had no control who went to my mom's house to deliver. It meant me going into the store and they gave me the right items and some free extra cookies and a bigger pack of ground beef then I ordered for her at no extra charge. It didnt help convince my mom that delivery services work, she still wants to drive.
The other issue in our area is you could not pick the location that delivered to you. We have 2 alberstons pretty close, less then 1 mile apart from the home, one is much newer and has a wonderful bakery but you cant pick that one, I have no idea how it works, but my mom's two orders did come from the newer store, but when I asked her neighbors about their experiences sometimes they got theirs from the older store, and my neighborhood, same thing just randomly gets assigned to a store.
I do wonder what if these stores go out of business before the year is up? When the merger was annouced, our local news said that if the merger went through the alberstons in our area would close.

Safeway employee here-
It depends. Some of our stores do their own delivery- about 10 stores in seattle and portland. The rest use 3pl like doordash to deliver. Driver tips are appreciated, but optional.

There used to be 40$ off your first order too, but seems that is what you are trading for the 99->49$ difference?

Do the $5 credits work for in store purchases too or just for delivery? We have a Safeway in walking distance so definitely do shop there often enough to ensure we'd use the $5 a month in store and the other perks wouldn't be bad but it would feel a little silly getting delivery just to use the credit.

Edit

Looks like it actually excludes delivery but works for in-store and DriveUp & Go. $50 for $60 in credits and some other perks seems worth it even if we never use the free delivery.

For Annual paid FreshPass subscribers on and after 9/16/24, the credit can be applied to in-store or DriveUp & GoTM (excludes delivery) purchases of qualifying products.

This worked out okay for us. We spent a week in Vegas and had a condo with a full kitchen. We used the Fresh pass to have groceries delivered and it saved us on a car rental or paying for Uber eats or eating out for every meal. I didn't use the service much once we got home, though, but the credits each month helped offered the cost.

This isn't a deal unless you live far away and there's no other grocery stores. Safeway's prices are already high. That $5 doesn't dent anything.

Yes Safeway is an expensive place to shop, but their store brand items are reasonable prices. Storebrand prices are equal to Giant. If it came with a discount to all Signature products, like Soda and Bread, Cookies, etc I would buy it.

Even if you never use the delivery service and a regular shopper, you come out ahead.

$60 in store credits.
If you use the monthly Starbucks perk, grande drinks are $2 (saving about $3-4).

I'm curious. Safeway is expensive compared to what? In my city Safeway has the lowest prices.
