Not surprised. These heaters were never UL listed.

Always trust the big box stores for UL listed heaters. Lasko, Vornado are typically trusted go to brands. Even the crappy Walmart brand usually has UL testing and is better than most of these Amazon only brands

Govee makes amazing lights and I own several but would never trust a heating device with their name without any official testing certification

the problem with UL listed heaters is the UL rating explicitly says you *cannot* control the temperature via an app. this is a huge bummer.

the specific reason for buying the Govee was to use the app to control the temperature.

I'll be switching back to Dyson now that I've found out you can control the temperature via Apple homekit and using mqtt

also Govee has made lots of other wifi enabled electronics previously which is why many people recognized the brand and chose to buy it.

So is the Dyson UL listed?

I have a heater connected to a smart plug and my automation turns it on and off based on the temperature and motion in the room.

Is it safe to use it as just a fan? I really like mine this bums me out. Maybe I just use it while I'm awake.

Yeah, my understanding and based on the wording of the recall is that it's only because of the remote control function. It doesn't seem like there's anything actually defective with them, just that remote operation, possibly with the functions provided, is considered dangerous and against UL 1278. Maybe someone with more information as to the specifics of the Govee models or UL 1278 can chime in. This is based on similar stories with other brands like Dyson.

Regardless, I don't expect the remote function/app to continue to work long-term. They may even turn it off this week. So even if you keep it, it's probably just going to run as a dumb heater rather than the smart heater you paid for at some point.

Yes, but they also can't run over the app due to the same UL 1278 causing the Govee recall. From Dyson's website "¹³This machine is compliant with safety standard UL 1278, as required by the US government. For this reason, heating and temperature control are not available in the MyDyson app. Please use your machine's remote control instead".

People just work around it with a smart plug and other automation tricks that are 3rd party to Dyson.

I own two of the H7131s

I use this almost every day… my office in my basement can get cold, even during the summer.

I can never use the heat higher than the lowest setting, which is still too hot. I can't be closer than 2 ft away when it's on, at the lowest heat setting, because it would burn me if I got closer. There are three levels of heat, fwiw.

I am connected to it in the app, and I love how it auto shuts off and sends an alert to my phone when it is knocked over.

I purchased a unit a couple months back and just started using it lol. Then I get this email. The unit is pretty nice but too bad it had to be recalled.

Don't know the wattage of the heater you are using, but please make sure tour smart plug is rated for the power heaters draw. A heater can easily pull 1000-1500w and most smart plugs won't handle that kind of load.
