Not terrible for a cheap throw away knife.

Most report it is some kind of 3cr13mov/X30 cr13 steel. 52-54hc.

What is the law surrounding these in CA? Everytime I google, I get more confused that I was before. Can I buy this, put in a bag and throw it a car trunk?
When cops ask "do you have any weapon on you or in car?" - should I say yes and its in trunck?

Illinois with some of the worst gun laws allow you to carry an auto open knife as long as you have gun license.
I found this online for California

Folding knives
Can be carried openly or concealed if folded. This includes pocket knives, Swiss Army knives, and certain utility knives. Switchblades are a type of folding knife, but their blades must be 2 inches or less.

This is fodder for the landfill. You can get cheap 8cr knives for $15 or $20. Hell, Walmart briefly had their orange D2 Benchmade knockoff for $10. But anything below that floor is not a deal at any price because you're just buying something to throw away. This is mystery steel, there is no way its going to hold an edge past the 2nd or 3rd time you open a cardboard box. And if you're buying a $3.50 pocket knife you're not the guy investing in stones to maintain an edge.

I needed a knife in a pinch and bought a WM knife as the choices were slim. Turns out it was only ground on one side. 😂

Thanks. Do you have a couple you can recommend ($15-$30)?

This is a steal at Walmart for $25, much higher quality from well respected brand: https://www.walmart.com/ip//7569100232

Helpful review here, explains why people should consider buying this instead of the super cheap Ozark Trails: https://youtu.be/1za8pfLrVFI?feature=shared

Here's just one option from a quick Amazon search https://a.co/d/8eOTkJK

But really, just look for knives with some reliable budget steels, 8cr, 14c, D2. Some decent budget brands are Kershaw, Civivi, CJRB, Vosteed, etc. There are others people might recommend, but stay away from the random Chinese Amazon brands because the listed steels may be a lie, who knows how the heat treat is etc.

If you want something offbeat, there are traditionals like Opinel or Svord in carbon steel. They're a great value but not what most are looking for and the lack of corrosion resistance requires some upkeep.

One other thing to note, is all knives no matter how nice will dull with use. Learning to sharpen is the next step.

Folding. I.e. pocket knives are allowed almost every where. Fast open knives often have limits as do fixed blades. Some states will have blade limits on foldables.

https://www.akti.org/state-knife-laws/

This is obviously a third part site. You should always check current state law.

Indiana has no limit on fixed blade knives. I once forgot my KABAR was next to the shifter driving through Wisconsin. Just cause I'd put it there. Not as a defensive weapon. And was going faster than I meant to. State troopers got me at like 2AM. I did explain to them I completely forgot it was there and I had a CCW. They told me to throw it in the trunk at the next truck stop.

But obviously know the laws of the state you are traveling through. Illinois for a long time would prosecute you if caught with a firearm even if you were driving through. But they changed that years ago. If you're driving through/not stopping. You could carry. I obviously would not without checking for any updates

They can't search your trunk anyway and if it's in the trunk you aren't carrying it.

You do not have to answer any questions. You're protected from searches or seizures as well as have right to remain silent.

Research and know your rights.

These Walmart Ozark Trail knives are not the gas station special you're thinking about.

They are decent for the price. They will cut, they will have some longevity and they are a good tool. Far from heirloom quality but great value.

The knife industry has gone kind of wild with their pricing structure and I welcome Walmart's approach to functional knives for a good price.

This is a good knife for $25. However he isn't saying why to not buy the Ozark trail. As a matter of fact he said to buy it when it comes back in stock.

He's simply saying for people who are going on eBay and over spending on the Ozark Trail to put that money towards this combo pack instead.

At the end of the day the $10 orange crossbar lock D2 Ozark Trail is a major win.

When the knife is unfolded, is there any way to keep it that way and not fold back to cut yourself during a self defense fight?
