Consensus seems to be LOTR is fine for middle school or so and older. Hobbit is written for kids, the trilogy is not

I have only seen the movies, how violent, language, adult situations, etc, are these books? My young advanced reader needs something new to read.

A few years ago, I read the Hobbit every night with my then 7- and 9-year-olds. They enjoyed it a lot and laughed many times and has suspense many times. After we finished the book, I surprised them by telling them there were movies and they enjoyed the Hobbit movies after having read the books.

Now, they are 9- and 11-year-old advanced readers. They are aware of the LOTR movies, but I told them we won't watch them together until they have read the books first.

I may get this set for them.

This paperback set is mediocre quality. I got it couple years ago and after first time reading, pages started to fall out from the bind.

Love it. I did the exact same thing with my boys and the same result! Read to your kids!

No modern swearing or adult situations (Tolkien was devout Catholic), and the violence is not described in a gory manner. Start with the Hobbit, which was intended for children.
