I pulled the trigger on this model during Black Friday last year for the same price (identical specs except for a 12th gen I7 instead of a 13th gen and it came with a copy of Alan Wake 2). I've been very impressed with it and would definitely recommend.

My CPU gets fairly hot during games like Satisfactory (90+ degrees C if I remember correctly). I bought a laptop cooler which helps keep temps down.

Is the RAM upgradable and does this have a 2nd SSD slot?

Picked this up last year and upgraded ram to 64GB and added another SSD. Great deal imo, handles everything ive thrown at it, running it on external NEO G9 57 8k monitor @ 120HZ

I just picked up the $500 HP Victus with the i5-13420H +4050 + 512Gb SSD (single slot) + 16GB DDR4 RAM + 250nits 57.9% sRGB screen + 70Whr battery

Assuming equal build quality (although I think most people would argue the TUF is better) and ignoring the RAM speeds (since IF I keep the Victus I plan on upgrading the RAM to 32GB DDR5 just like I would with this TUF F16):
~10% faster processor + ~ 40% faster GPU + 1TB SSD + ability to add 2nd SSD + 300 nits 100% sRGB screen + 90Whr battery for an additional $500

Oof decisions decisions....Clearly this machine offers much better future proofing for gaming and potentially running AI models (80-90% better). And it's a good price too. I am definitely worried about thermals though

I guess question for the community in case anyone can weigh in - Are there laptops with better build and heat management to be had with the RTX 4070 for this $1000 price point?

Highly unlikely. You can always tear it down, and apply your own pads and or paste. But outside of that, get a cooler, and clean the fans every couple months if you plan on using alot
