Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

I just ordered but my delivery is on Nov 19th. How do I pay off $299 before it gets delivered? Do I need to pay off before it gets delivered to avoid activation fee?

Are these all the steps to unlock and cancel? Which steps should be done first: activation or paying off the full amount, and then activating (points 2 or 3)?
  1. Order your phone online:
Select the phone you want and choose the option to pay for it in full at the time of purchase?
  2. Visit a Verizon store:
Go to a Verizon store with new phone and inform them that want to pay off the full balance?
  3. Activate service:
Follow the steps to activate the phone line in the store.
  4. Cancel within 3 days:
Before the 3-day window closes, contact Verizon customer service or log in to your online account to cancel the service?

Yes for both Verizon and AT&T
Verizon terms claim their credit check is a "soft pull" - so it does not affect your credit score.

How can you payoff the device at Verizon store? And can't you pay it off online?

Was it canceled immediately, or did you receive an order confirmation followed by a cancellation email?

Would it be possible to use Verizon version overseas after paying it off, but before 60 days expiration?

Verizon unlocking policy in the documents states it is locked for 60 days then automatically unlocks.

What is the cheapest plan on VZ which you have to buy with this? Trying to figure out the worst case cost.

ATT unlock is conflicting

unlock policy says

Your device was paid in full when purchased or paid off through an installment plan. Your installment balance must be zero before unlocking. Nothing mentioned about 60 Day Active Service for Installment plan phones.

but when click device unlock eligibility requirements on the unlock page

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/unlockstep1

Purchased on installment plan, paid off early: The wireless number assigned to the device must be active for at least 60 days. Wait 48 hours after you make your final payment to submit your unlock request.

Verizon is much easier unlock policy.
For new line 60 days? For upgrade its instant after you paid off.

So if I get this on AT&T and pay it off in full can I then immediately turn around and trade it in to get the extra credit for iPhone 16 Pro? Reading AT&T terms and it looks like I can't do it but hoping I am misunderstanding.

Did a upgrade through AT&T and it let me make a 30% down payment so I could use Walmart GC's. Paid $90 plus the tax.
