Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

chat with verzion assistant, typed "Unlcokde device" and select iPhone 14 ordered, bot replied back "Based on your account info, your device is unlocked and no code is needed to program it for use with an international carrier."
Did your phone come sealed in original box? Wondering, if they're sending refurbished phones now.

For cancelling service, can you just log into your account and click "disconnect"? You don't need to use chat or anything, right? Thanks!

For those of you who have received your phones, are they new phones in sealed boxes?

Folks - Can someone help me understand something. Once I get the device, I can pay off the device in full. Once its paid off, can I cancel the line?

I understand there's still a risk of the phone not being unlocked, but should i be worried about anything else?

This is with Verizon.

One can also suspend their service for 90 days. The phone should get unlocked within that time period. You can then come back and disconnect the service completely.

but if you suspend the service, you wouldn't be able to get rid of the activation fee....

True - I dont want to be stuck with a locked phone. I dont want take my chances - wait for 2 months - then check. If the phone is unlocked, I can call in and disconnect completely. If not unlocked, I will be paying for 2 months of service and then disconnecting it.

Couple of things about unlocking:

1. ATT and VZW says 60 days wait for unlocking after the phone is paid fully, not active service (even if the customer rep says so) and I have couple of people verifying from previous deals that they were able to get the unlock code.

2. ATT phone can e unlocked right away using SIM swap method, I have updated the wiki with the steps. For me it always worked with Android phones and many have reported it to be working but YMMV.

Some questions:
  1. Does the unlocked phone to transfer the eSIM have to be the same platform as the ATT phone (e.g. ATT iPhone -> unlocked iPhone, ATT Android -> unlocked Android)?
  2. AFAIK, for iPhone -> iPhone, it's pretty easy to transfer the eSIM. But for iPhone -> Android or Android -> Android or Android -> iPhone, the eSIM has to be removed from the source phone and then activated on the target phone (e.g. get a new QR code from the carrier). Does the action of removing the eSIM from the ATT phone and activate it on the unlocked phone satisfy eSIM "swapping"?

No carrier allows that anymore, they caught onto the fraud/scam of exporting iPhones out of the US for resale long ago. You're about 10 years too late.
