4. It will create a new account and close the old account on your existing login.
5. You will be charged prorated amount on old account and new account starts right away.
6. Your internet will be on for a while but one day it will stop working.
7. If you owned the modem then you can restart the modem and go through activation process on new login and move old modem over. Else use new rental modem for activation.
8. If you have you mobile lines then you can call them to move the lines to new account.
My wife and I have switched accounts for many years every time a deal expires. I started going in store because you get the equipment right away. You will have to constantly replace modems every time you switch but it saves hundreds.
why dont use your own modem? i always call when changing accounts and they are able to switch the modem to new account easily.

Do i have to wait for the internet to stop working (step 6) before starting the activation on the new account (step 7)? I'd like to plan out the internet downtime
You can try to activate it sooner and just restart the modem. I didn't try that.

Depends on your definition of free. You don't have to buy it, but you pay a monthly fee to have it, so you are essentially renting it.
Paid rentals are in no one's definition of free. The previous Xfinity offer had free router modem in it

Didn't fail. Trump administration happened.
Not sure why the down votes on your comment. People were talking about Internet data caps and net neutrality would have barred these tactics like Xfinity is doing. It is also a fact that Ajit Pai, Trump's pick for FCC Chairman killed net neutrality. There's no debate on this....

I switched to xfinity internet. In terms of mobile service, they use verizon. I used it before, no complains.

I have the same plan since last year this time, also added unlimited data for $30 extra a month so around $85. You can get unlimited data if you have Xfi complete for $10 a month, though you will have to use their Modem with router built in. Signed up a new account with Wife's name yesterday, got a deal through the chat on 1200mbps plan for $75 with unlimited data. Price is good for 24 months.
When you unlimited data on internet, does it mean it still has the 1.2Tb cap?

Thanks for sharing! Will moving to the new account void the promotion/credits on the old account?

How fast is it to, say, cut off my dad's full price Xfinity service and restore service on my mom's name as a new customer? Same physical address, same physical cable, modem etc.
Just called and they required proof of new residence like new lease, and you can't use the same modem…

Never heard of them needing proof before, what exactly did you ask for? I would see if you can borrow a modem from a friend or buy a cheap used modem, switch to that with your current service and verify it's working then you should be able to just cancel your current service, the reason doesn't matter as you could just say you're switching to fiber or something. Then signup for new service under your Mom's name using your previous modem.

Follow these instructions and it works like a charm. Return your old modem to the store and pick up the new gateway modem at the same time. Very little down time. Thanks!
