Go with Ecobee, thank me later. I switched from Nest to Ecobee and couldn't be happier. Nest wasn't that great because the AC would kick on unnecessarily, wasting energy. Ecobee has a built-in feature where it can offset the temperature by one or two degrees before turning on the AC or heater, making it much more efficient.
Also those in Georgia - Georgia Power Specifically they have fantastic deals on Ecobee.
Once you buy your thermostat and install it - you can just call your utility company and ask them to unenroll you from the rush hour rewards program, which they are obligated to do if you ask them to. They will then remove you from the program but you'll get to keep your thermostat.
That prevents you from having to opt out each time and this works for all thermostats and not just nest. I worked for a utility that had one of these programs a few years ago.
What is the trick for the rush hour rewards if you want to snag this but don't want them controlling your AC during hot summers?
You just will need to opt out each time. They will move your temperature automatically at a specific time that they announce shortly before (for example they might tell you at 12:30pm that there is a rush hour at 1pm). Temperature is adjusted at 1pm. You can move it back to what you want immediately after they change it.

Do most power companies monitor and control these thermostats? I seem to recall that my local one did a similar program a few years ago but seemed to indicate they would throttle/limit based on how you used it.
Purchased one about 6 months ago for $20-30 and have gotten about $200 back in rewards for it so far.
I think Ohmconnect has a $75 cash/gift card after you connect for 30 days, and my utility company had a $70 bill credit plus $40 each summer.
You do need to opt in to the rush hour rewards, but as others have said you can opt out later.
Ideally, pick a time that you'll be able to stay enrolled in a program for 30 days without needing to turn it off so you can get the rebates/incentives.

I tried this in the past with my electric company (NV energy) and they said the only way to opt out is to return the thermostat and buy my own.
I work for the Cleco energy efficiency program (Louisiana). The information is incorrect on being customer. Once you click the link for Cleco marketplace, you are required to validate your eligibility: "To help us validate your eligibility, please use only your service address or your meter number (NOT both) to validate."
I was under the impression that what was stated in the post was that you don't need to sign up for a remote a/c setting program to get the deal, not that you don't need to be a utility customer.

Only if you sign up for their remote temperature setting programs which may or may not come with discounts or rebates.

But if you go to their website they have a rebate form that would get you one of these for free.
Also a bunch of other rebates on things like heat pump water heaters.
