I wish the Mexican versions had the Johnny Marr spec. How close is the Player II to having those specs?

What specifically do you want that the JM Jaguar has?

It's the definitive version of a Jag, to the point where its kind of like the default Jag model now that people buy. Taylor Swift has one even: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGDkg3QiJmk

I am not sure that I would agree with that assessment. One of the problems with Jaguars is that fender does not offer as many models compared to Strats and Teles. As a matter of fact, I am not sure that Fender makes an American Jaguar at the moment (besides the JM), which I think has a lot to do with the fact that Jaguars have never been big sellers for Fender, and may also be why you see them as the "default" Jaguar. The JM Jaguar is a completely different guitar than a "standard" Jaguar, just about everything about it is different. It does not use fender pickups, the wiring (switching options) is different, the bridge is different, and the tailpiece (or at least the way the trem arm attaches) is different.

The Player II Jaguar is also very different from a "standard" Jaguar and the JM Jaguar. It does not have the same switching options or bridge. The neck on the Player II has the same radius, and fretboard material as the JM, but has a different finish on the back of the neck. Unfortunately the body of the Player II is not routed to "upgrade" it to a "standard" or JM Jaguar. If you are new to Jaguars I would suggest finding a used Classic Vibe and upgrading the pickups. Unfortunately I dot not think that Bare Knuckle (the manufacturer of the pickups for the JM Jag) sell Jaguar pickups, but you can probably find them used on eBay or Reverb.

Other than hardware quality bumps, the main things are the Johnny Marr signature Bare Knuckle pickups and some extra switches as well as a 4-way pickup selector to make the pickups go from series to parallel wiring. The pickups would likely be hard to source since you can only find them used and the extra switches could be wired in if you have some basic circuit/soldering skills. Other things like the neck are more preferential anyway or a result of the massive price jump to that model.

Like the other commenter mentioned, you really need to ask yourself what features you want and if that even matters for the price difference. If you don't know then this guitar is more than enough.

Fender did make an American Jag as recently as last year. Even as recently as 6 months ago, because I remember gawking at them on Sweetwater. They probably discontinued it literally because of what I allude to: The JM Jag is now the definitive Jag model. When people like Taylor Swift are buying them, it's one of the rare times where an artist model supersedes the original design.

Just to let you know, this Jaguar lacks the rhythm circuit present in all the vintage ones that gives it the iconic character. Fender stripped it down to make it simpler for entry level guitarists. You are better off buying a Strat or a Telecaster, or if you really want a Jaguar, Squier Classic Vibe Jaguar 70's is only $450 (made in Indonesia) and sounds just as good as a Player II Jag made in Mexico.
Don't waste your money on this.

Electric guitars don't have a sound, only pick-ups and amps do. 😊

We may have to agree to disagree on this one. The original Jaguar will never be replaced. While the JM Jaguar may be at its peak of popularity, and Johnny Marr has lifted the model up quite a bit since shifting to playing it pretty much exclusively, there have always been, and will always be people looking for that "Jag sound" which the JM Jag does not give (neither does the Player II for that matter). That is why I asked you what you personally wanted that the JM Jaguar has.

I would say it is more likely that Fender removed features from the Jaguar to save money more than to make it easier to use. And the problem with your suggestion that someone is better off buying a Stratocaster or Telecaster completely ignores the reason most people buy a Jaguar. The 24" scale. I completely agree that if someone is looking for a guitar that is a true Jaguar, at this point they are much better off buying a Classic vibe and upgrading the pickups, Bridge, and tailpiece. In that order. Well... it might be good to replace the bridge first so that you can at least play it until you buy and install new pickups. Jaguar bridges (especially those on the Squiers) are almost unplayable. I honestly would stay away from the Player II Jaguars because they cannot be converted to a "true" Jaguar without major body modifications, though they do come with a slab rosewood fretboard if that is something you are interested in. The Player I Jaguars are routed in a way that they can be converted to a "true" Jaguar much easier than a Player II, but the Player I Jaguars have pao ferro necks.
