Very good deal. A good deal on PETG would be $10 - $12 and this comes in on the low end of that. Two added plusses is that 1) it is a well known brand and 2) that it only requires the purchase of 2 spools (not something like 10).

Don't know for sure but I have about 20 spools from them and they are all plastic. if by chance they are cardboard (I don't think that they would be), you can return.

Not sure about this since it is not sold by Sunlu and also it is just black. If you need more colors Sunlu now has 6x1kg spools for 10.99$ each on their website (can be slightly cheaper with referral coupons). For basic colors I usually use those deals to buy in bulk once a year.

The picture shows them on plastic spools. One of the other colors available on the same page is shown on cardboard, so I would assume the picture should be accurate. If not, it's definitely a valid reason for a return if that image isn't actually accurate.

If you need 5-10 rolls of any filament type you can almost always get buy 3 get 2 free or you 6 get 4 free for sunlu, jayo, and some others. Can mix and match types (PLA, PETG, etc). Total comes out to under $10 per roll.

Example for Creality - $9.59/roll for 4 rolls PETG

That was my thought as well. The spools shown on cardboard are PLA if you select it rather than PLA. even more reason to say it would be misrepresented.

I skipped this deal yesterday because other listings for Sunlu are sold by Sunlu. Most likely this is a reseller just trying to get their numbers higher by offering short term discounts, but it should be pointed out that you can buy from Sunlu on Amazon and this isn't from them.

I'm new to 3D printing, just started about a month ago. Is there a difference between having plastic vs cardboard spools?

It all depends on your 3D Printer and how it consumes filament. If you have something like the Bambu Labs AMS or Creality CMS - which can house 4 spools, the spool holders come in contact with rollers that need adequate friction/etc to roll them forwards and backwards. Cardboard spools can sometimes be too wide, too tall, and even ones that work can produce lots of dust inside the AMS.

Then you have systems like the Bambu Labs AMS Lite that, instead of contacting the outside of the spool - they grip the inside of the spool. Then you're at the mercy of the diameter of the spool's center cavity and if it makes good contact so allow rotation, etc.

If you have an AMS you can use cardboard holders by just wrapping electrical tape around the edge of the spool. Just make sure you stretch the tape when you put it on along the edge.
