Well, it's not really a knife, it is metal and it is serrated, but more like a comb than a knife. When the roller rolls normally it is out of the way. If the roller reverses direction, it gets dragged down to comb the roller and collect hair. Then when the roller goes back to normal direction the caught hairs is released from the comb to be sucked up.
