The A1 in its original form has been around for a long time, at least a decade. They've continuously added stuff like BT and Wifi over the years .The speaker itself is solid, I used to have it on my desktop, very clean sound and understate look.
The customer service is awesome too, I had a pair of A5s after selling my A1s, after a few years the A5's control knob started getting sticky/distentegrating, I emailed CS for a replacement part fully expecting to pay for it since its been years out of warranty, and they just sent me a set no questions asked.
Audioengine speakers are awesome and they have awesome customer service. I found a pair of Audioengine A2 speakers on the sidewalk several years ago, and they are the best speakers I've ever owned. I have contacted Audioengine twice to replace the internal amp and the woofers, and they never asked me to show them proof of purchase. They just sold me parts at a very reasonable price, and in the process I got a free upgrade to the Bluetooth amp, which basically turned my speakers into the newer A2+ model. Highly recommend!
Did you look at _why_? Every single negative review with a writeup notes wifi problems. Honestly, I couldn't care less about wireless on a computer speaker.
For $99 this is an outstanding bargain and a great speaker. 6" is desktop speaker sized, and the quality is very high. Far better than the "Pebble" and other basic speakers lots of people buy.

That's a good point. I've owned Audio Engine speakers before and enjoyed them. I completely agree that I would would also not purchase these with the gimmicky WiFi enabled streaming considered as a positive. However, the fact is that they are marketed with the feature. A feature that impacts the MSRP to make it seem like this is a better deal than it is. Why they even have an A1 variant with WiFi streaming is beyond me since they are designed to sound their best when used as equidistant from the listener as the L/R speakers are distanced themselves.
As it stands, these aren't a bad buy IF you have perspective and want to use them for computer speakers only. There is, fortunately for all of us, a lot of competition across brands/models in this price range for that specific use case scenario which makes this a decent deal for folks who can understand how to get a good experience out of this product and not be swayed by poorly implemented features that impact the listed MSRP. Honestly, with how many great options are out there, my personal take is that these are a good choice and worthy of a post here (especially since the standard A1 model has rarely ever dropped to $150) but the competition is pretty steep so it probably shouldn't be thrown out as an, "outstanding" bargain.
Do you need to turn these on and off when you use them, or do they automatically shut down when there is no audio signal? It seems like it might be a pain to turn on and off since controls are on the back of a speaker.
Zero comparison. Those powered speakers will run circles around these tiny low watt desktop speakers. The Klipsch could be a serious home theater 2.1 system when paired with a sub. These AE speakers sound nice and are good enough as low foot print monitors but in a separate class entirely.

But the spec-sheet is only 10W different, bigger size, and more input choices,(which I care the most) I just wonder is it worth almost another 100 dollars. I will use it mainly for computer speakers, to replace my cheap Logitech 5.1 computer system. Too bad, I missed the Heritage Promedia deal.
