But as someone else mentioned another common strategy -- again I really wouldn't call it a hack -- is just using a Google voice number is the number you give away to most people. Effectively your primary phone number. This allows you to take advantage of all sorts of introductory rares from prepaid carriers that are only available to new customers. If you're willing to ditch the number at the end of the subsidized or lower introductory rate.
There is downsides to this obviously. If you're relying on a Google voice / volp number some places won't let you use it for ID verification. Although frankly you'd be surprised at how much you can get away with using a Google voice number I find.
but you're not allowed to send text messages to look more than one person at a time . I mean you could probably get away with a small group or something but anything that could be perceived as business related, a mass email, sending text to every one of your students in a large class could technically be violating the rules of Google voice and could have your number taken away.
if you lose your Google voice number you don't have a lot of recourse.
but there's really no harm in at least having a Google voice number as a backup and does give you a stable phone number for which you can then freely benefit from introductory through other carriers since you don't have to worry about porting or keeping the number you get from them
I do miss the days when you could walk into a Best buy buy a $45 card and get six months of coverage.
I used to take advantage of that just as a secondary number. I own more than one phone just because I'm sort of a hobbyist. So it was a nice luxury to just grab a $45 mint mobile card pop it in my old Pixel 4a. It was a nice tiny phone that I would take jogging or whatever and not that worried about it falling or breaking since it's less expensive to replace and pretty old.
It was effectively a $7.50 a month plan.

EDIT: I see the port in mentioned in the cart as far as assistance. Does Tracfone count as Verizon? I better check that sim first and see if its still alive

I looked into it a bit and it's a junky as it sounds. Like when the rental car companies wanted to "recover" the fact that they have to pay rent for their building. What BS. Boycott this crap
