I have also looked at machines like this or ones that you can build yourself. I don't think it's really worth it for private use, even if you print a lot. Because the raw material is hardly cheaper than the filament itself, the cost is high and you're not guaranteed good results.
It only really makes sense if you want to produce filaments for testing or in colors that are not available to buy.
It's not worth it for recycling leftovers or producing standard PLA, PETG or ABS filament.

Also, this is just for the extruder. If you really wanted to do this, you also need the Airpath ($930) & Spooler ($3,547) or you are in for A LOT of manual work. Awesome video though, looks like a fun project!
I see no value in this. Coming from someone very involved in the industry, common filament (the only thing you have a shot at making with this) is made at such scale that you're not going to beat the price point PLUS the quality of filament you're making with this isn't anything like you're getting commercially.
So i have looked into this and these machines don't make sense. The only way for this to really make sense is to get the very expensive machines and start your own filament line but not like this. These are optimized for shipping. Also your labor isn't free so you are fighting against other people. Contrary to what the previous person said the raw materials are extremely cheap compared to filament, especially if your doing matte or other filament where there is a premium. All that said you need a large investment for this and way more space thank you think like 50ftt for a proper extrusion line and cooling bath and winding path and more. You can shrink that but again that is just one line and one color. So you need a warehouse. Plus if your not in an area that is naturally dry you suddenly have to dehumidify that area. Plus parts break so its a full on commitment and at the end of the day you could same a decent amount of money but not with a machine like this and you still have to pay yourself and the people running the machines oversees are not paid very well. You are better off buying in 10k spools from a manufacture and get your filament for $7-11 a spool delivered. Then you don't have to worry about it and can focus on what you already do the printing. Plus when your doing more than 100-250kgs orders they will make a custom filaments for you anyway so there is very little benefit to these machines. All that said if you do make a filament line I want to come over and check it out and bug you to make specific colors for me. lol
