For $400 more, the 14" with the M4 Pro chip is $1799.
Some reviews say the regular is a bargain for the performance but if you need the extra performance, the M4 Pro is worth the upgrade.

Stick with it, I don't think this new model offers anything significantly improved compared to m3 pro

Sweet! I chatted with Best Buy and they are refunding me an additional $42 from the $1439 pricematch I did last week to micro center. Those of you who did the price match last week get your extra $ back!

The average user doesnt need more than 512GB for a drive. Unless you are working a media production job, the way most files done virtually (Google Drive, etc) means people barely need more than the system and apps for storage.

Like, Im a filmmaker, I own a 1TB because when im doing a job, offloading all my footage to my laptop is nice. But even with all my editing software installed, and a bunch of media sitting on my computer, Im still only at 350GB right now. And Id bet Im a 5-10% use case at best.
The average user doesn't need a $1400 laptop...

Also just 350GB as a filmmaker?

Are you filming with a 2003 Nokia or what?

We recently got the 14" MBP with M3 Pro chip and 18GB/512GB for $1499. We're still in the return window. Any guidance as to whether the M4 16GB/512GB (or the M4 pro 24GB/512GB) makes more sense? We're non-power users but try to hold onto our stuff for a while, so we just need something for web browsing, Office, slight photo editing, etc that will work well for 6-8years.
Specific questions:
  1. M4 (vs M3 Pro): $100 cheaper but slightly slower processor and 2GB less ram. But camera is supposedly better. Any other notable differences?
  2. M4Pro (vs M3 Pro): $300 more but faster processor, 6GB more ram, better camera, TB5 ports (does this matter in practical use?).

Is it worth trading in my MacBook Pro M3 pro for this or stick with what I got?
I see only 8GB memory option on M3 one. No 16B ones at Costco. Right?

In your use case (if you don't want to save some money with an Air, and as someone who appreciates the nicer screen and speakers, I get it) I'd suggest getting the M4 because it's cheaper than the M3 Pro and if you aren't power users there's little reason to spring for the M4 Pro chip. The M4 base chip is pretty evenly matched with the M3 Pro in CPU tasks, and it's a newer chip so it might be supported for an extra year over the M3 Pro. In the past the base MacBook Pro was gimped compared to the models with Pro and Max chips, but Apple has fixed that this year. Thus, imo there's very little reason in picking up a Pro chip unless you need the extra power often (high end photo or video editing, for instance).

Was wondering the same thing. I do plan on doing some machine learning work, so wondering whether that justifies returning and getting the M4 Pro (although I expect both will be adequate).

This is tempting. Recently I got a MBP M4 pro, 24gb, 1Tb for $2029 at Apple. I feel like I spent too much on a laptop. My Mac mini is M4, 24gb ram, 512gb SSD for $900. My laptop is like $600 more than this deal. For $600 you can buy lots of stuff. However, my ram usage on Mac mini is constantly above 16gb, so I know 16gb ram is barely enough. I can live with 512gb. But I plan to keep this laptop for at least 5 years so Decision decision...

Thanks, I think that makes sense.
With the M3 macbook, there were some additional ports, etc with the M3 Pro/Max compared to the M3 base; that's no longer the case with the M4 MBPs, right? The base M4 has the same number of ports, SD card reader, etc with the only difference being TB4 vs TB5 and a faster chip?
Also, the base MBP can now run 2 external monitors WITH the MBP screen, correct? With the M3 MBPs, I think only the Pro/Max could do this, hence the question.
And, yes, the speakers/screen of the MBP are pushing us to go with it over the MBA.

I was turned down stating that BB does not price match with Costco, I eventually price matched with Amazon

You're correct on all counts:

Btw, I'm in the same exact boat as you and already pulled the trigger on the M4. When it arrives, I'm going to back up the M3, return it to Costco, and restore the backup to the M4 and hopefully pick up where I left off after migration assistant does its thing.

Anyone know when Costco will have these in-store and not just ship-to-store? I was hoping to buy through Instacart Costco same day but no locations have it and the Costco website says "Item not sold at warehouse"

Looking at the specs is this the same as the "new" M4 (non-pro)?
