before buying, check the SD thread or with your local utilities company - i got a nest thermostat from my electric company for $49. a bunch of utility companies in many states can provide free or highly discounted learning thermostats
I own the 3rd gen and I have not had any issues and the build is solid, however, it's a 9-year old design. I feel the $139 price tag is a bit too high. In addition, if you are concerned about future compatibility, the 4th gen has a new Matter integration which is the new standard on smart home device integration with other Matter technology (Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, Google's Assistant, and others). If you do not want to be left out when Matter becomes common, then you might want to wait.
If you can get the gen 3 for a lower price until gen 4 price comes down as well as for the Matter technology to mature, then I would hold off on the 3rd gen purchase until a better deal comes around.

Some have conditions, like you have to be permanently signed up for their power saving program here in Vegas where they can raise or lower your AC without you being able to change it during peak hours if the grid is starting to get overloaded.
Most of the time you can opt out of those program and still get the power savings discount. This is in Phoenix.

Does this version offer matter support via firmware update? or it is only supported by the 4th gen out of the box?

I HATED mine. Warranteed one for wifi issues. new split unit, this thermostat, very good voltage, and the thing would constantly shut off after a year. I replaced the battery and still no go. Switched to the standard nest 4th gen and while it doesn't look as "nice quality" physically, at least it keeps the darn hvac system on.

Providing a counter point to all the negative comments I've had my 3rd gen nest for over 4 years and 2 separate houses and have not had any issues. I installed and uninstalled them myself just matching the wire colors. It's great to be able to control temp from anywhere and save energy via eco mode when away. Also like being able to voice control temp when laying in bed if I get to warm or cold.

So this device is about 5 years old at this point. Mine would constantly shut itself off in the winter. Definitely could have been an issue with the furnace, but I replaced the battery in it and the problem mostly went away. At this point I'm really tempted to buy a new one... But at the same time it's 5 years old! I'm thinking I should wait for the new gen to go on sale.
Guessing you don't have a C wire run to the thermostat?

Will this work without a C wire? I've researched and says it will but mixed user feedback. Google checker says it would work so I tried and would get a red blinking light. Plugged it into usb to charge up and same result. Maybe I have a bad one.

Anybody switch from Ecobee to Nest or vice versa? Have all Ecobee right now and am wondering if it's worth it to switch.

I've very much been looking to upgrade to a 4th gen. My issue with my 3rd is that it got a bit over aggressive with how it adjusted temps. During the Winter it would consistently try setting the low to temps in the 50's, which lead to me having to use "eco mode" which at least let me set a hard minimum, but kind of diminished the overall functionality as I'd mostly made it a dumb thermostat at that point.

the new one looks like a mushroom turned sideways. Doesn't look appealing for some reason.

It will work without a C-wire, but the battery dies after a couple of years. You can use the add-a-wire devices to "create" a common wire if you can't add an actual common.

You should definitely get your furnace checked out. Good chance it is overheating/overfiring and hitting a limit switch of some sort if it is turning off and coming back on while heating. The fan on your furnace will continue to run as it 'reboots' as a failsafe, so you may not think the furnace is shutting down. May just need the gas valve adjusted but could be a more serious issue.

I got a Gen 4 from my electric company 2 days ago from a previous thread for $58. I bought 2 (for upstairs and downstairs). The Ecobee premium was also on sale if you prefer that. YMMV with your electric company.
