Better to get a Thunderbolt 3/4 SSD enclosure for $75 or so and adding your own NVME SSD. You'll get faster speeds that way.

So I've been looking in to building my own. My Mobo has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 20Gbps Type-C port that I don't really otherwise use. Was planning on using it for an external NVME SSD.

What gen nvme should I get that would be overkill based on that port?

I use these T7s for TimeMachine and they work great! I just bought one of these 4tbs for $30 more, and put the 2tb version that it replaced to use to professionally edit large photos. It's definitely fast enough. If I started fresh, I would buy a TB4 enclosure for editing, but the T7 speeds and buffer are working great for me. It may help that I have 64GB of device ram.
Also note: I read that my Mac Studio (M2 Ultra), and many Macs, do not support the speed gains on the Samsung T9. That's why a Thunderbolt enclosure or drive is important if you need the speed.

Regarding the USB / Thunderbolt issue, Macs do support USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), but don't support the USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 protocol (20 Gbps). Instead, you have to skip straight to Thunderbolt 3/4 which supports 40 gbps speeds.

I'm a little confused with all the terminology (my apologies). I have a 2023 MacBook pro M3 with a 2TB HD and 36GB of RAM. I'm looking for a drive for TimeMachine. With my specs, do you think this would be a good choice? Also, years ago, the 1TB drive in my TimeCapsule failed, so for years after that I did redundant TimeMachine backups. If I were to continue that practice, would you buy two of these? Many thanks! John
