It's illegal to possess lockpicking tools in North Carolina without a license

Edit: actually, looks like it's illegal to provide locksmith services without a license, possessing the tools doesn't appear to be a problem. I've been told wrong by family and friends for years.
https://toool.us/lockpicking-laws/

Looks like there are 4 States (NV, OH, VA, MS) that having this in your possession may cause legal issue ("Prima facie evidence of criminal purpose").

Lots of mis-information on this thread. While you always should review your local laws, in MOST places the possession of these TOOLS does not constitute a crime. The reality is that there is a healthy culture of lock-sport in America. Lock manufacturers have spent a lifetime of creating security by obscurity. Many locks (most?) are fairly easily bypassed using basic tools like this. While I have zero interest in using these tools nefariously, I think the use of them in learning and practical environments (Lost the key to your shed lock?) is real.
I own a handful of pieces from CI. I would recommend them if you are just getting started. Genesis kits are a great starting place. Avoid the crap on ebay/aliexpress. Quality here will make for a better experience when learning.
lockpickinglawyer (owner) is fantastic on youtube. If you want to see the art of possible, check him out. While he makes it look way too easy, the mix of history and technique is without equal.

I feel like this shouldn't be on the front page without someone saying:

"Nothing on one, two is binging, tension on three..."

Thank you LPL

Sorry, but the above tools in the photos shown would be easily recognized as lockpicks, much like a crowbar would be seen as a crowbar.

You get stopped for anything and have those on you, you're a criminal (hence the police stop) and now you're carrying burglary tools on you. Hope you never "have a burned out light" on your car. And hope you can hire that lockpicking lawyer!!! That's probably how he became famous, defending everyone getting caught carrying his tools.
so you wanted to post like you know something, and then prove without a doubt to anyone reading this, that you don't know anything about the topic

In some places, mere possession can be a crime, and in most places it can get very sticky very quickly if there is any suspicion of nefarious intent.

As a landlord, I use lockpicking tools to legally open doors to my properties when tenants have changed the locks. But I always do my best to hide this activity as I don't want to have to deal with the cops. Having been detained in the past for for several hours due to some other issue (rolling papers) that could or could not be illegal depending on intent, that is a roll of the dice that I'd prefer not to chance.

"Lockpicking Lawyer"? What sort of nonsense is that?

Also, be careful -- these are probably illegal to VERY illegal where you live.
The lockpicking lawyer has very helpful videos if you ever have a question about a lock you may have lost the key for or are curious about how secure a lock really is (hint, not secure at all against a skilled hand). His videos are usually short and to the point. He is a legit lawyer and nothing he is doing is illegal.

I know others have jumped all over you for your incorrect statements, so I only want to add that if you have these in your house for personal use, a hobby, or whatever then you're not going anywhere that might have intent, so there would be no issue. It is okay to DYOR.

Just came here to say that the Lockpicking Lawyer is fascinating to watch on YT. While I can't think of a need for these, esp at this price point, the technical ability (much like engine building) is educational to observe in his videos.

A brief anecdote for the interested - after about an hour of practicing with a co-worker's lockpicking tools sitting at my desk at work, I ordered a set from CI. As soon as I got them, I tried them out on my basic kwikset knob and deadbolt at my old house. Using the rake, I had both of them unlocked in just under 15 seconds. We moved not long after that and when I changed my locks, I went with something far more secure. Even changed out the cylinder when I replaced a deadbolt further down the road thanks to what I learned from LPL.

Any autodialers? Need one of those for a combination safe that came with the house that I'd prefer not to destroy with a crowbar.

A pack of BIC ballpoint pens is a lot less expensive.
