Is this DIY able? Do you need a permit to have this installed and running?

If you want to connect to grid, permit is required.

They ran this similar deal 2 to 3 months back, I was contemplating but feel like there will be more price drop with Chinese made lithium battery before the hammer of "tariffs" are sweeping through...

They need to offer the smaller 6k capacity package or at least bring back the 1000 discount on the 12k package. I also am waiting for prices to drop, may need to wait till next year though.

I can confirm; I'm getting one now. You would have to get permits from Utility AND Township (City). They are asking for project documentation, should be installed by licensed electrician (they are asking for license and proof of insurance). Timeline for East PA: Utility - 3-90 days, Township 1 - 16 weeks (based on my electrician words).

The bottom part of the panel, where the batteries connect, can be separated and installed up to 20m (~65 ft) away. They don't give a max length for the hots, neutral, or ground wires, but they gave 20m as the max for the cat6 cable.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to install a solar panel and battery system? I know it can save money in the long run, but the upfront investment might take many years to recoup.

If you're in the market for a $9,000 home power solution, it might be worthwhile considering whether it makes sense in your situation to hold off for an EV that has V2L capabilities, such as the Ioniq 5. That would provide 4x the power storage capacity of this power solution and you could put this $9,000 right towards it.

This is my current thinking. It'd be better to spend $20-30k on a used Tesla that has 3-5x the battery capacity and serves as a form of transportation. It's not exactly apples to apples as not all Teslas do V2G or V2L, yet. But I'm holding out for that capability. Also, if you drive off, of course, you lose the battery power to your home, so it's not helpful if your car isn't home. But for the emergency situation where you are home, an EV battery seems like a much better investment than this.

YMMV. No pun intended. Not all vehicles can output 7200W so check the vehicle you're considering and your use case (which loads are you backing up). Some are limited to as little as 3600W.
