For people subscribing for the first time, I'd recommend signing up as soon as the discount is live so that next year there's not much overlay in your subscription expiring and the discount going live again, and if you don't auto renew this year's sub you'd most likely be able to grab the discount next year too.
I haven't renewed in like 6 months so been waiting a long time for this

also OP should have provided this link to the announcement instead

So no discount on renewals/extensions for existing subscribers, just "upgrades". Eff that.

I keep an eye out for this type of deal for upgrading tiers. The thing is that lately it has come through too late for me to find it worth it for the amount of time left in my subscription. I generally rely on that I can catch a deal on PS Store cards at some point to make paying for another year around $60 or so.

I do have an issue with the service for it being needed to transfer your saved data, when necessary. There's another issue I have with PS+ but I can't remember it atm.

Same thing happened last year. Let your service lapse for about 30 days and they will give you a discount to come back

Can I just create a new account to take advantage of the 30% off for new subscribers?
yes but you won't have access to your other digital games in a new account

Its been like that for a new years. discounts to bring you in and upgrade but nothing to sustain. I've had PSN for a 5+ years but plan to let it finally lapse since I don't use MP anymore and the monthly games kinda blow. If I can find a 20% $100 PSN card I might consider rejoining.

I let mine expire and haven't missed it yet. If it comes around for $26 like the old days I'll buy back in. For a (now-priced) $80 Essentials year, I can buy at least four used games I actually want instead of hoping for something decent to come up as a "free" monthly game, and at least two will still be on my queue pile at the end of the year.
Mine has been up a full year now

Sucks for us current PS Essential subscribers who dont want to upgrade to the next tier. I guess best we can do is just buy the fairly regular ~18% off PSN $100 cards on Eneba.

This is my gripe as well. They convinced me to upgrade and now nothing is offered for me to keep the upgrade.

This is ridiculous! I'm hoping you can buy PSplus from a third party. I did that years ago to get deals on it. So hoping third party will come in clutch this Black Friday!

Nothing for loyal PS subscribers is a kick in the teeth. They keep raising their prices and don't even offer a discount.

Is it not required for some multiplayer games? Mine is up this month and I want to know how pissed my kids will be Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Best way to get a discount on your membership now is take advantage of best gift card deals between Thanksgiving & xmas. Grocery stores, watch your flyers, dollar general, watch for the bigger sales. Add ps store cards to your wallet & it will save u at re up time. I saved around $50 last yr, maybe more but I stocked up pretty thoroughly. Save $20 here, $20 there etc

So if they don't offer you a discount, will you not renew next time?
Can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic….but I probably will renew just because I find the service to be decent (seems to be an unpopular opinion around here) and I do play multiplayer a decent amount with my friends and find the $7/month worth it to play with them and the decent selection of included monthly games.

I just like to complain about loyalty not being important to Sony (and honestly many other companies) - it's all about squeezing as much money out of the user base as possible.

I let my membership expire a month ago and listed my PS5 for sale.
I'm not paying $100 per year just for the "ability" to play a few games online, along with their lame ass free "temp" games.
And let's not forget that new PS5 games are like $80 +tax so yeah, Sony can go kick rocks.
I'll play online for free via PC...
