I've been running this NAS for probably a year or better. I don't do any VMs or anything like that. Just basic automated phone image backup (using QFilePro -- free app) as well as for my Plex server. Been running like a champ.

I have two 500 GB SSDs in it for caching as well as 4x20TB HDDs for storage. RAID 5 config. FWIW, I also upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB.

I'm not a NAS guru, but it's simple, straightforward, and just works for what I use it for.

NAS DIY is fun and cost-effective (and learn a lot).

However, for those of us with expensive electricity and little time, they NAS hit the spot.

That being said, they work when they work, however if you hit an edge case, you'll have to get into the cli weeds.

Literally yesterday I replaced a dead WD Red with a shucked 14TB seagate (mach2) from the external drive Best Buy deal (Amex $25). My qnap 453 did NOT auto rebuild. I had to manually run from cli "mdadm —add" command to get it in to the raid5 and then it began to rebuild.

So, great when it works. Frustrating when it doesn't.

Always exercise backups 3-2-1

Bump… I have the same question. Has the ds923+ on my watchlist for awhile but some said this has better hardware specs but worse software management system?

QNAP is very customizable, but you can easily break things if you don't know what you're doing. Synology has less options and you have to do things their way, but it's usually fast and smooth.

QNAP is fast in adopting new tech, like the 2.5GB network and TPU for AI recognization. But new things mean they could be less stable. Synology is still using a lot of old tech hardware. I've watched a YouTube comparison where QNAP can do object recognization (like find all the burger pictures) but Synology took 2 years to add that feature.

For what it's worth, my foray into the world of NASes was with Synology. Returned it. Eventually got a QNAP. For whatever reason, I preferred the OS on QNAP.

I wish the 6-bay was having a similar discount. I have the 453be and this is a slight upgrade mostly for the additional storage capacity (88TB) max. I am coming from 4 x 12TB in RAID 5, so it would be a significant jump but would rather shell out some additional money up front to further extend / future proof by having the additional bays that I wish I had now.

Any ideas if any 6-bay models will be hitting BF sales?

You can't upgrade the memory in this thing. This is the TAC 8. You can only do that w/ the TAC 4

Edit: This may have been only the first production run... not sure.

It's upgradable. It's very clear on QNAP website:
System Memory 8 GB SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 8 GB)
Maximum Memory 16 GB (2 x 8GB)
Memory Slot 2 x SODIMM DDR4

Fake news. I upgraded the RAM in mine and the hardware specs show 16 GB.

I have 4x20TB in it (in RAID5) -- so technically 3x20TB. My pool is recognized as 60TB.
