I have two 500 GB SSDs in it for caching as well as 4x20TB HDDs for storage. RAID 5 config. FWIW, I also upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB.
I'm not a NAS guru, but it's simple, straightforward, and just works for what I use it for.
However, for those of us with expensive electricity and little time, they NAS hit the spot.
That being said, they work when they work, however if you hit an edge case, you'll have to get into the cli weeds.
Literally yesterday I replaced a dead WD Red with a shucked 14TB seagate (mach2) from the external drive Best Buy deal (Amex $25). My qnap 453 did NOT auto rebuild. I had to manually run from cli "mdadm —add" command to get it in to the raid5 and then it began to rebuild.
So, great when it works. Frustrating when it doesn't.

I bought a similar one last year, but ended returning as I bought computer parts for a much better computer (MSI Pro Z690-A Mobo with 2.5GBE, i5 12600K, 32GB DDR4 and Antec P101 Case with much more drive bays) which I put together and installed TrueNAS for roughly the same price during Black Friday sales.
A bit of an overkill for the task, but for the same price, why not get a better computer if you have the space for a bigger case?

In my case I can add as many SSDs as I can possibly fit into the PCIExpress ports, using PCIExpress to SSD adapters, plus the 6 SATA ports the Mobo has and 3 more NVME PCIExpress ports in the Mobo. I had an old Apple 32GB SSD (the one they use in the Fusion drives) laying around and an adapter to NVME, which I'm using to run the TrueNAS OS.
Another thing I also did is I added another SSD and installed Windows on it so I can dual boot using my Mobo boot assistant and use that computer for something else as per my needs - and yes, I do understand this is not recommended and could bring inconsistencies to the NAS disks, but they're all disabled within Windows.
At the end it all comes down to what is needed by whoever is either putting the computer together or getting an enclosed solution by one of the major brands.
I must say I came from a Netgear ReadyNAS box and I am really surprised and happy with TrueNAS. Wouldn't switch back at all.
Four 18Ts in RAID 5.
I too bumped up the ram and added a SSD for caching.
No VMs, and all my apps are running on a server.
Probably should have just gotten a DAS but had a USB drive die and was in panic mode.
Not smart enough to know if I have any issues, but everything seems OK.
