I've been running this NAS for probably a year or better. I don't do any VMs or anything like that. Just basic automated phone image backup (using QFilePro -- free app) as well as for my Plex server. Been running like a champ.

I have two 500 GB SSDs in it for caching as well as 4x20TB HDDs for storage. RAID 5 config. FWIW, I also upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB.

I'm not a NAS guru, but it's simple, straightforward, and just works for what I use it for.
NAS DIY is fun and cost-effective (and learn a lot).

However, for those of us with expensive electricity and little time, they NAS hit the spot.

That being said, they work when they work, however if you hit an edge case, you'll have to get into the cli weeds.

Literally yesterday I replaced a dead WD Red with a shucked 14TB seagate (mach2) from the external drive Best Buy deal (Amex $25). My qnap 453 did NOT auto rebuild. I had to manually run from cli "mdadm —add" command to get it in to the raid5 and then it began to rebuild.

So, great when it works. Frustrating when it doesn't.

Always exercise backups 3-2-1

This is a reasonable deal for people looking for a small NAS.
I bought a similar one last year, but ended returning as I bought computer parts for a much better computer (MSI Pro Z690-A Mobo with 2.5GBE, i5 12600K, 32GB DDR4 and Antec P101 Case with much more drive bays) which I put together and installed TrueNAS for roughly the same price during Black Friday sales.
A bit of an overkill for the task, but for the same price, why not get a better computer if you have the space for a bigger case?

Are there any apps to interface with TrueNAS? Qnap has some decent android/apple apps

I've been watching 4-5 bay NAS prices for the past month waiting for these deals, bummed the 6-bay version didn't go on sale. Came down to this one vs. Synology DS923+/DS1522+, but the superior hardware transcoding for Plex is the difference maker for me in favor of the QNAP.

Great price, great NAS, best bang for your buck out there if your looking at 4+ bays. Unless you really need the larger pools for most people even a 2 bay is perfectly fine.

Good to know on the plex transcoding..I am looking for something similar and this might be the move. Using plex/transmission/time machine/general storage for files/music/video. Synology has a good rep but these specs look better. Terramaster looks really nice too but quite a bit more expensive.

I haven't searched for apple/android apps actually. I don't need them in my use case. I do all the management in the web interface of the TrueNAS server and map my network drives on my family's Macs, iPhones and Media players, using VLC Network functions. TrueNAS does have Plex server app as well as many others for you to implement in the server though - And of course, with the extra power the custom PC has, it comes in very handy for the added apps.

Agreed as far as energy costs. The space saving is also a good reason for someone only interested in 2 - 4 bays as well.

In my case I can add as many SSDs as I can possibly fit into the PCIExpress ports, using PCIExpress to SSD adapters, plus the 6 SATA ports the Mobo has and 3 more NVME PCIExpress ports in the Mobo. I had an old Apple 32GB SSD (the one they use in the Fusion drives) laying around and an adapter to NVME, which I'm using to run the TrueNAS OS.
Another thing I also did is I added another SSD and installed Windows on it so I can dual boot using my Mobo boot assistant and use that computer for something else as per my needs - and yes, I do understand this is not recommended and could bring inconsistencies to the NAS disks, but they're all disabled within Windows.

At the end it all comes down to what is needed by whoever is either putting the computer together or getting an enclosed solution by one of the major brands.

I must say I came from a Netgear ReadyNAS box and I am really surprised and happy with TrueNAS. Wouldn't switch back at all.

I need a NAS for file storage and automated computer backups.Cloud backup would be nice too. Which is better Synology or QNAP? Im a tech guy but dont have extra time and dont want to build my own NAS or fiddle with things. Just want somethihng reliable that I dont need to tinker with.May use once in a while in the house to stream a movie from this over to a Shield TV or a Roku, but dont need remote viewing or any Plex type stuff.

This is a deal. I paid a lot more through Western Digital.

Four 18Ts in RAID 5.

I too bumped up the ram and added a SSD for caching.

No VMs, and all my apps are running on a server.

Probably should have just gotten a DAS but had a USB drive die and was in panic mode.

Not smart enough to know if I have any issues, but everything seems OK.

I have a qnap 8 bay, it's pretty sweet, the interface is not bad either, the qfilepro is nice to back up mine and my wife's phone pictures and videos... I also have plex and some vm's.... I would get another qnap brand again

It's not just the power use, it's what that substantial extra power brings: heat.
