When I canceled, I asked her if the fees would be prorated, first she said no, but I pointed out that I just opened it a few days ago and she said that in that case, it would be prorated. I did not press on the activation fee, I am willing to pay it if the website does not let me dispute it. I don't know what the final bill will be, it is a bit confusing as I still have another line with a 14 from the earlier deal that I need to try returning today.
Yeah, in retrospect, getting the AT&T version and paying it off immediately when you see it in the AT&T account is probably the right move, then you can try unlocking right away, and if does not work, 48 hours later will still be within 3 days to avoid the activation fee.
BTW, I did this one through AT&T and another one through Verizon, the Verizon one I paid off and canceled while it was on the way, all within 3 days, so the final bill should only be a few bucks to Verizon. It showed as Flex Policy after canceling and then locked to T-Mobile that I transferred to it when it came. That was definitely less hassle overall and I am not worried about being locked to them. Perhaps I should have done the same thing with AT&T, as I am keeping both phones long term.

Today (11/30) chatted with VZ customer care to disconnect service
Immediately after disconnecting (within an hour), I received the Unlock request denial email! So looks like I will have to wait for 60 days...
($90 tax at Walmart) + ($24.98 * 36 pay off phone) + ($10 prorated fees best case) - ($450 giftcard * 95% value due to lost opportunity of CC cashback) = $571.78

The promo is Att's that they've had since the 16s came out. WM is just advertising for them and giving you the gift card.
