They can be used as rear surrounds just like another speaker. But they may not be ideal. Most "studio" marketed speakers are meant to be a fairly flat and accurate response (I know nothing about this model in particular) listened to at a relatively near field.
I personally use 7 studio monitors for my 7.1 surround system in a relatively small (20x30 maybe?) room with no issues and they sound great.
I wouldn't recommend tacking them onto a random system as surrounds though, especially if your other speakers aren't also "studio" speakers.
