I've heard Costco is better, but I'm already 20 deep in these. And no, they don't stack with each other. Different dimensions.
Might not be cost efficient to do that.
Some plans have you hanging these by the side flanges - I wouldn't do that personally, they aren't designed for that and if you put a lot of weight in the totes they are bound to fail. The better method would be to make legit shelving, but that ups the cost. Plus these are ~ 30" deep, which makes lumber allocation difficult, so you could just do 24" deep shelves and have the bins hang off 3" on the front and back, just to make it easier to cut the lumber.
That said, very ballpark, a single sheet of flat stock (4x8', whatever you choose) will be enough for around 8 bins. Add in some 2x4" and you're probably at near $100 just in lumber, not including screws, nor the effort in hauling all that home and cutting it. I mention that because I just built a new workbench designed around the Costco bins, 2 levels to store 12 bins below. I used 2x3" rather than 2x4" mostly for space considerations - the (3) 3/4"x4'x8' MDF panels I got cost $50/ea IIRC, plus about 20 of the 2x3" @ ~ $3.50/ea. Then there were construction screws, and I hardened the top with some ($70/gallon) shellac...... gets expensive.
As I mentioned I grabbed a $200 Edsal rack from Costco and can fit ~ 12 bins on it with some space to spare on each shelf and a short top shelf (due to ceiling height in my basement, otherwise I could fit ~ 15 bins). Assembly was easy and took just 30 minutes with one of my kids "helping".
Same here. I'm not light but I made the mistake of thinking I could just step on one for a boost to get something on a high shelf. Nope.
