$60 more than barebone gets you 16g ram and 256g ssd and an m4. MF needs to be more aggressive on pricing. Sorry all the Minipc manufacturers as well but apple is in town.
An M4 with 64GB of RAM or 1TB of storage is easily 3x the price, and it probably would have 3x the performance too.
This is probably more usable in a STH situation than an M4 as well, if you're not in the Apple ecosystem for home automation.
The 64GB of ram is kinda nice

With the prices of 1TB M.2 NVME and 32GB of DRR5 (make sure you get laptop memory, it's shorter. Also no heatsinks on it as the mini's have less room and it might not fit!) you are better off getting the barebones IF you feel comfortable putting it in yourself (easy) and installing Win11 etc. It's not hard, youtube as many tutorials.

Not sure what you mean by "self-refer"? Could you provide the details on what that is and how to use it?
Thanks

Laptop memory is called SoDIMM - for "Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module". Desktop memory is UDIMM - Unbuffered. (Workstations/Servers use Registered DIMMs)

Agreed. But I'm a cheap SOB so I'm willing to take the risk. I can always dispute with my credit card if anything goes wrong.

Reviewing prices, test results and comments on this 8945HS vs the 7940HS:
  • Internally, the chips are virtually the same.
  • The barebone version of this 8945 is about $40 more than the 7940 on Amazon ($439 vs $400).
  • There's not a lot of difference in performance (a few percent) across many tests.
  • The 8945 is more efficient; uses ~20% less power at full load.

For home use, the difference in power consumption will be negligible; a dollar or two per year lol.

My main takeaway was this:
If the 8945 is the new standard, could be that we'll soon see prices drop on the 7940 models. How far how fast remains to be seen, but could be some great deals coming up.

what home automation application requires more than 16gb? if you're not in the apple HA ecosystem, you can still run HASS, etc. what exactly can you not run HA wise?

Yes, they all do.

We run Windows-free across all PCs here (for many years), never a problem.

If not settled on a distro, we like LMDE [linuxmint.com] best (for general use). This after using several flavors over the past 15 years.

Never thought I would have separate development machines, but these mini-PCs (with HS suffix; also Intel-free) are so cheap and almost free to run. Enjoy.

The main benefit of energy efficiency isn't saving you a couple of dollars on your electricity bill but having a quieter machine which needs to spin fans much less
