i actually disagree, i regularly edit 4k videos with heavy effects and do heavy photo editing on this same laptop. sometimes it outperforms my 10 core desktop.
Need to own and use a MacBook air first.
Nearly 4 years old. I'd be worried about the battery ($100+) and Apple dropping support. Not worth it.

I had the M1 Air 8gb and currently have the M2 Air with 8gb. I personally would not buy these without 16gb in the future.
I feel the 8gb limit regularly. Lots of hanging especially on wake and opening/closing safari and certain websites. YMMV

Be more concerned about these being refurbished FROM BEST BUY. They are not the best in terms of quality checks.
Indeed. I bought a geek squad refurb iPad Pro, and it came with deep scratches on both glass and back, battery health was in the 8x %. Looked like a store display model. Returned immediately.

Anyone knows for how long apple will still support M1 from now?

These computers will be four years old from next month. SSDs degrade, whether you have 64GB or 8TB. At 256GB, those cells have most likely been written over many times. It's simply not worth it since you can't just swap it out. Where's the value in this if you have to throw out the machine within a year or two and buy something else? It's simply smarter to purchase a new or slightly old computer. I don't understand why Mac users think their devices are made of fairy dust. They're not. Apple's advertising really has a hold on some.
My sister in law has a MacBook Pro running fine from 2013.

My brother wanted to "upgrade" this for her. She's surviving 11yrs on 256Gb and 8GB. 😂

Battery is her only issue since it's not long for this world. But it still works.

This is what I have too. I replaced the battery. I follow these threads to see if I come across anything amazing and upgrade, but my current one still just works

Apple had better support this M1 chip for as long as they could! M1 is Apple's own creations!!!!

While this might work for some, Metro wouldn't allow me to add a 2nd iPhone 12 line to my account...

I just traded-in to Best Buy my 13" M1 Air with 512 GB and got $475 for it. I'm surprised they aren't marking them up more / giving so much for trade-ins.

I have a MBP from 2015 as well but those are different. you might not be aware that the newer macs with soldered ssd are literally planned to die because all ssd has a TBW, number of TeraByte Written, by which time the ssd can just die bringing the whole system with it. it may not die once TBW is reached but I wouldnt bet any thing on that chance.
To make matters worse, 8GB RAM could easily mean swap space is needed, the performance hit may not be felt by the user but the TBW is affected since Swap is the system writing stuff onto SSD. so for anyone and everyone dealing with these Macs, please check the TBW of your SSD and take appropriate actions when it's a high number. there's no clearly written down TBW for apple's SSD but the standard is 600TBW for a 1TB drive. hence 256GB is around 150TBW.

I have M1 with 8gb, air and Mac mini. Absolutely no issues running heavy programs such as Final Cut and insta360. Use the mini running 4k and 1080p. Maybe you got a lemon cause browsing in safari/chrome/firefox has never given me issues. Even my old intel chipset from 2012 didn't have issues with that.

Or possible you're using it wrong and clicking the red X, thinking you closed a program like a pc when it's still open. Unsure, but 8gb is plenty for most users. The mini runs a plex server while driving the two monitors, compiling movies, and 12tb external storage, word, excel, list goes on. Never had issues with the MacBook Air either, maybe take yours into the genieus bar.
