I agree with you. I have devices using Android 8 to Android 15. Whatever app I use on my Android 15 phone, I can also use it on my Android 8 phone without problem.
I actually have an Android 14 tablet that seems to have more incompatibility with apps than older versions of the OS do, at least according to the Play store which blocks their install. They always seem to side load just fine from apk's though, don't get updated automatically that way (at least to my understanding).

If Google Play Store won't allow me to install a certain app, I won't be using that app. So far I haven't encountered such apps. I use APK to install Google Play Store on my Chinese devices.

I'll add that if you're running on the cutting edge, you'll need the best and the latest tech. A low-end, low-rent device, or even a 5-year-old flagship device will not (and rightfully so) meet your demands.

I don't know how good or bad this tablet is but I can tell you that TCL warranty service is the worst. I bought a TCL phone that went bad after 8 months. It was a hardware issue, not software. I attempted to get a replacement. I spent 2 months of making numerous phone calls and sending numerous emails for warranty service. No luck. I filed a complaint with The Better Business Bureau. New phone in 2 days.

I actually had to do this the other day with Angry Birds 1. Wasn't officially supported on my Android 14 tablet according to the Play store but worked just fine. But for the most part I think that is a good rule of thumb to have, there are exceptions though. OsmAnd for offline maps is another great (and safe) app that requires it for many users.

I think Amazon Fire devices also require the same.

These are great tablets for kids and older people who just want a simple device that works for basic browsing and playing videos. At this price, it's a good deal if you have the right expectations.

Is there a decent WiFi hotspot I could use instead? I'd rather spend a little more money on a nicer one, but if I could just get a WiFi hotspot, I could use all my devices, because I can't use my phone as a hotspot, but I don't know if that's a Moto thing or Mint. And I don't know if I could use an extra mint SIM card with said hotspot.

Don't use it to visit "questionable" websites. When you are not using it, turn-off the internet connection. Reboot it every day, or whenever you feel like it. For watching YT and reading ebooks, Android 12 is fine. I have a tablet that only has Android 9, I use it all the time. Never a hiccup. It has a nice 11-inch screen (10.75 to be exact). That's the only reason I won't be buying anything smaller than 12-inch.
In regards to the "questionable website" business, I think people are being a bit hyperbolic by not understanding how Android functions these days.

The primary system services got decoupled from the base OS ROM several versions ago, meaning that you will still receive updates for key components even after the base OS is retired.

For web browsing, including in-app web applets, that component is called WebView. As long as you're receiving updates to WebView, anything that runs on a webpage should be fairly insulated from any new exploits that get discovered.

Where the base OS security updates protect you has more to do with the applications you install. So, if you don't install any questionable software, having an OS that has reached EoL isn't the end of the world.
