I'm not an expert, however it seems that the P3 are missing phase correction coatings, that decrease the quality of the picture quite a bit.

P7 is probably better, it just costs a little more:

Man, the Vortex buzz is always crazy in these threads, like they're the only good glass out there.

I can't speak for these, but Nikon still makes some fine glass.

Personally, for the same price as Vortex, I'd almost always go for a comparable set from Athlon.

Burris, Celestron, Hawke, Luepold and others all make all make good glass. Vortex is fine, but hardly the only company with good products and a good warranty.

How do you get the teachers coupon? My wife is a teacher and I would like to see if we can take advantage of that. Been eyeing either the Crossfire or the Diamond backs.

There's nothing pro's about their prostaff line - these sell well because of the brand and low low pricing.

Nikon makes good binoculars (I have their Monarch HD so I'm a fan) but for any priced under ~$150, you'll get better elsewhere (ie Vortex for example, like their Triumph HD in this price range and the popular for a reason Diamondback HD are far better).

Nikon's Monarch 3/5/7 lineup are where they're great and made a name for themselves if you want something good/better/great (anything fantastic is $1k+ and you're looking at Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss, etc). Granted these now have the new body style from the Monarch HD which is nice.

Pro Tip: Nikon also sells new binocular as "refurbished" (new but without retail box) on their site [nikonusa.com] with 10% off and sometimes 20% off.

I forgot my binoculars on vacation and bought these or the next model up (I forget) to hold me over. I wasn't expecting them to be great, but I was shocked how bad they were. Nikon makes some great glass, but this isn't it. I couldn't wait to return them.

I've been considering the Vortex Triumph which are currently $83 on amazon, any other suggestions for $100 or less? General use - bird watching, stars, take on trails, cruises, etc.

It really depends on what you're looking for. It's going to be hard to find anything truly great for under $100 brand new.

I don't know anything about the Triumphs, but Sierra.com sells refurbished Crossfires for around $100. I think they're a model level up from the Triumph. Costco sells some compact 8x34 Bresser & Pirsch for a bit more.

If you can afford more I'd recommend finding a pair of last generation Athlon Midas. For under $200 they are ludicrously good, but they are a little heavy. Costco also sells decent Luepolds for about $170.

If you truly have a hard limit of $100 you could also look for a pair of used Athlon Argos or maybe a pair of Vortex Diamondbacks. Be wary of the Diamondbacks, though. For the last few years they've been selling some cheaper models as Diamondback "Classics" or some such nonsense.

My recommendation would be to go for 8x and not 10x for general use, but both are fine.
