Are they that bad? I was specifically looking for a bottle WITH a straw, but I guess that makes sense.

Yea unfortunately because the water collects around the rubber, and unlike a steel straw or a cap that's dishwasher safe the rubber doesn't get washed as frequently

What rubber part? We have a Stanley, similar, but you don't have to bite the straw to take a drink. No mold there but we hand wash it after every use and have a straw brush. Checked the entire lid and straw area, did see or smell any mold there.

I have this, not only do you have to regularly brush out the bite valve to keep it mold free, the flip valve no longer stays closed on my bottle after about 6 months of use. Normally the would be ok but the top of my bottle flipped open while it was in my carry on and the pressure change in the plane caused a lot of the water to drip out.
