The EDP does last a bit longer (but not by much) whereas the EDT smells better.
It's a toss up either way, get one that lasts a little longer or one that smells a little better.
La Nuit De L'Homme by YSL had similar issues.. and then they releases YNDL Bleu Electrique which smelled similar but fixed a lot of those longevity issues. I wish D&G would do something similar with this one as it is a nice scent!

Price range is also a big thing -- some great ones can be had for $15, others (like Ombre Nomade mentioned above) can be $575 for the larger bottle.
If you like stuff like The One, some of my favorites are Jazz Club/By The Fireplace by Maison Margiela.. Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford, Wanted By Night by Azarro, Continuum by Tumi, CH Men and CH Men Prive by Carolina Herrera.
There's a lot of great stuff by Lattafa (who does 'clone' fragrances that smell like the original, but cost about $20) but I wouldn't call a lot of their stuff 'safe' since it generally has some oud or similar notes. Ombre Nomade mentioned above is one of my favorites, but it's definitely not a safe recommendation by any means 😂

The things that will kill them the fastest are heat, sunlight and humidity.. so if you have them in your bathroom? that's one of the worst things for them. If you have them on your windowsill in your bedroom, that direct sunlight will ruin them and if you keep it in your car that gets hot, that's also bad for them. You don't need to baby them (I know some people put them back in their boxes and hide it in a dark closet or dresser), you'll be fine. I keep mine out on shelves in a bedroom and they're fine there. If you have them in heat/humidity/sunlight, the notes start to change or even disappear over time.
They do typically have a dated lifespan (~5 years) which is how long the manufacturer will guarantee they should be as-intended for.. but unlike stuff like makeup, it won't really go bad. I have some stuff from the 90's that smells great today still.
As they sit, and as you use them, the fragrances seem to settle more and come off a bit stronger or longer-lasting when you get them. If you ever buy a fragrance and it doesn't seem to last very long, give it a few weeks and it will most likely work much better for you. I think it has to do with the air getting in the bottle and doing whatever it does

I actually have been storing them in the optimal way but only by chance LOL
I store them on a shelf in my bedroom closet. No sunlight, humidity or anything.
Mind you, I only have about a half dozen fragrances at the time so I'm not too worried about using them up in the next few years.
