Fiberbuilt makes a very good premium hitting mat. What makes it better than just a regular mat is the hitting area is make with bristles. This way, hitting fat (behind the ball) will not make the club bounce into the ball and trick you into thinking you are hitting it solid. I have hit over 10,000 shots on mine and its got very little signs of wear and my game has definitely improved. Also, very easy on the wrists and joints, I have not had pain hitting off this type of mat.

Would the golf simulator subreddit approve of this?
Yes, but the layout/shape could make it problematic if you are doing a sim build. I ended up getting a different mat and cutting a spot for a Fiberbuilt insert that I can replace. Long term it has been nice to only change out the insert. The holy grail insert is highly recommended by others as an alternative.

I never understood having the whole flight path be a mat, I understand the hitting mat and landing may but can't you leave it bare in-between?

Yeah, this is the way to do it. Simply get a Fiberbuilt insert and the rest of the mat simply doesn't matter.
But, honestly, don't get anything BUT a Fiberbuilt to hit off of. When I first built my sim, my joints were killing me and I didn't know why. Read up on it, got a FB hitting strip, and have never had joint pain again while also improving my game.
For novices who see this and wonder about the hitting mats that are $50 on Amazon, those are worthless strips of carpet. A quality driving range mat is expensive but is pretty much necessary. They rarely go on sale, so this is an excellent deal. Plus, they last a long, long time
