Can you explain the VPN part over wifi? It only works when connected to your home wifi so you can only stream when you're using your wifi?
If you set up VPN on your network (in-coming VPN, not out-going like Nord, etc.), then you can access things within your network remotely effectively as if you're connected as a local client. I know nothing about this camera, but I believe that's what they're saying. i.e., You don't need the subscription to connect remotely using their P2P service with your own VPN.

Does it come with the siding clips?
Set one of these up just now. Initial thoughts:
Unboxing & setup
Very well packaged and everything was snug. Separate quick start guides for the camera and solar panel setup with clear instructions. It suggests charging the camera for 7 hours with a 5v/1A charger before starting to setup, but I used a 5V/2A and started the setup after about an hour. It took me about 5 minutes to download the tapo app, log in w/ tp-link account (since I already have some kasa plugs) and add the camera with charge showing 99%. The tapo app also picked up my kasa devices seamlessly and is able to control them. The app continues to guide you through the mounting process as well, but I skipped that and will do later.
Picture quality
Very crisp compared to my wyze v3s. Took a couple of photos and then a 10 second video. Both saved to my phone automatically without a sd card installed in the camera. Checking the resolution in my gallery - both photos and video are 2304x1296 - so this is indeed more than a 1080p - and depending on your definition of 2k - it can be called that. @sazbad - check your saved videos. It does say 1080p on the box and in the preview, but the clarity is very good.
Connectivity
Connecting and starting stream over WiFi was almost instant (~1-2 sec). And it does stream over internet - turned off wifi and was able to connect, record and control lights, etc over 5G (connection took a bit longer, maybe about 3-5 secs). So, no need to tunnel into your network unless you block all internet access to your cameras.

And no siding clips in the mounting hardware - has drywall anchors and screws and some rubberized pieces to protect the power connections. Overall, I'm quite pleased - the camera looks solid and it didnt even nag me much on the subscription screen. For 30$ factoring in the prime cashback - its a steal esp given the higher resolution.

after reading reviews... tapo seems to be going the direction of wyze. the previous model used to have settings that allowed you to connect to a nas. in advanced settings -> camera account and network settings. these have both been removed, apparently, in this new version. cancelled my orders, sadly. reading reviews... very insightful.

I installed three of these four months ago. Solar charging works well (sunny Georgia). Picture quality is good. Biggest weakness of the Tapo camera ecosystem is no ability to snooze alerts. Level of annoyance will depend on your use. For example, if someone is mowing the lawn, you will get hammered with alerts. No temporary way to suspend the alerts other than putting your phone in do-not-disturb. Lots of other common scenarios cause same problem. Hanging out in your back yard, tons of alerts. Hanging out on your front porch…alert, alert, alert. It's the only part about our ring system that I miss. One other issue, loop recording does not seem to work. Once SD card is full, camera stalls. System becomes so laggy until I reformat the SD card (I'm using Sandisk high endurance SD cards). Those are my gripes

I returned all my Tapo order because you can't set notifications to different tones. This is the only part of Eufy I like and hence use. All the detection and whatever are the same across these price point cameras, it's the little things. I have me Eufy cameras at different places make different sounds so I know without looking what's been triggered. My home driveway has 2 cameras and are on one notification. My property has 5 cameras and they're on a different notification; the interior cameras are on another notification. Depending what goes off at what time, I don't have to worry or I bring the shotgun

Using Amazon Alexa routine trigger by Tapo Cam, I can set notifications to say something on any Alexa device like "Motion is detected at xxxx".

I have the kasa cam and they are similar to tapo and you can set individual alerts on those such as sound, motion, person or baby cry. You can also set the hours to send notifications. Are you sure you can't do those with the tapo camera?
